I have never had a real best friend. Either I call someone my best friend but when they respond I'm just "A really good friend" or someone else calls me their best friend but it's retracted two days later when someone new rolls around. Who says you can't be "like those girls in all of the teen fiction books"? And nothing is wrong with wanting to be loved. Isn't that what everyone wants, really? To love and be loved...

In my opinion, you are sort of like those girls, just the modern version. You are the person there for people in the middle of the night on AIM when they are upset. People love you for that. So really, you have both of your wishes, just not the exact way that you imagined.
