Well. Mr. Moleskine is upstairs so I won't a detailed, coherent account of my last few days in Asia, but bear with me regardless.
Back in Thailand things were amazing. Let's see... on Samui the Boop and my parents and I went on a boat tour of some islands. snorkeling and lunch on deserted beaches. I have a tan which will undoubtedly disappear by the time I return (the 10th). There were also days with too much percocet, but I won't get into the nasty details. Let's say this: its effects wear off day to day, leaving a nauseating, nasty filling in ones stomach. And we left that lovely island resort and were off to Bangkok the next day.
My mom is a lunatic and booked us in the most old-world hotel in the world. The Oriental. You now how some prissy hotels and deparment stores have a pianist in the lobby? They had a string quartet. Enough said.
It was Senor Dick's parting wish at the end of this year that I do three things: read Conrad's Heart of Darkenss, do well on my final, and pay attention in Spanish class next year. I was reading it when I got to Bangkok, when I found out that, quite curiously, that Conrad had written it the very same hotel. There was a room named for him on our floor, which the management tried to get us to stay in. Alas, tha parents said no. Also, the book is good, you should read it.
In Bangkok the boop and I shopped a bunch, and Mom booked us on tour of the Grand Palace and the canals with an english speaking guide, Utai. He drolled on and on about various sites and Lars kept him going by asking irrelevant questions. She spent the next two days regretting this decision and rhyming with Lucy, quite annoyingly, "Pikachi, I killed a Utai, and now I'm going to watch him die."
After three nights we left for Tokyo. My parents ditched Lucy and I for business class. Fin. The airport is an hour outside of town... and Tokyo is the most amazing city I've seen on this trip. It has like 10 downtowns, each incredible in its own respect.
I've slept four hours today, because Lucy wanted to watch the Wimbledon final. There was on replay of Andy Roddick and it got an interesting response from the family.
Lars: Laura, look at this. Can you believe how hard he hit that.
Laura (drunk, need that be said): I missed it. Lucy! Look at his ass! Amazing ass. I love it.
Lars just shook his head. Then I went to sleep, but my mom, who had slept through the second few sets, woke Lucy and I up at 4 am here for the Euro 2004 final. At 6, when it was over she insisted we go to the sushi market. I didn't want to but it was worth it. It's like 4 square miles of freeze-dreid, enormous fish being wheeled arouind by Japanese guys on carts and sliced up. The octupi and crabs were all still moving. Then we went to eat some at one of the wholesalers. Mom ordered sake. Bear in mind it was around 7 in the morning. The waiter said something in Japanese and the entire restaurant collectively gasped and stared at her. The sake was served nonetheless. Then I went to sleep for two hours and went to some p arks and the anime museum, which was outstanding. And now I need to pee... so I'm done
Also... someone gwet Modest Mouse tickets for the 19th. I miss you all and will be home soon.
