Here's my little rant for the day: goose liver. I got a request to join a group on Facebook for a "Fois Gras Free Madison." Now at first I believed this to be a joke. Fois gras, for those of you who don't know, is typically goose or duck liver and is served as a French delicacy (not my particular favorite dish, but its good). This dish has been around for centuries and is usually found at classier joints. Back to my issue with this group: I don't mind that there are groups out there like this - to each their own. But seriously, let's think things through before we randomly click "accept" for the invite to the group. Goose liver? You are upset about goose liver? Now I understand the issue is ethical treatment of the geese (they are being force fed), but why just stop at fois gras? Why are we ignoring all the other animals that aren't treated well, that are killed unethically, raised unethically? Like cows, chickens, and pigs. I am willing to bet that you eat a hell of a lot more chickens, cows, and pigs that you do goose liver. Not only does this group seem weird, but it is weird timing. There is so much going on in this world right now that affects each and every one of us a lot more than freaking geese do. For example, majority of the 20 people in this group are students at UW-Madison. Do any of them belong to a group about the safety of our campus? Or finding the murderer who is on the streets and killed a UW female student yesterday? Nope - they are worried about geese getting force fed and want us to call up the classy joints and protest. Right. While you all worry about liver of a goose or duck, I'm going to worry about my safety and those of the people around me and hope and pray that something like the death yesterday doesn't occur again.
