Well, Willy had his dental surgery this morning. It was scheduled for 1130hrs today, but the OR team were a little head of schedule so they asked me if I minded if they could take him a little earlier. Of course I didn't mind, I'd rather have the procedure done earlier than have them tell me it would be later (due to unforeseen delays) or postpone it for another day.
So, as I'm helping him change into the johnny shirt (they still look ridiculous, not to mention draughty), and handed him his blanket we proceeded toward pre-op. There he started flirting (fluttering his eyelashes) with the nurse *cheeky monkey* as she was taking his pulse and other vitals. The anaesthesiologist met us in the 'family room' explained what was going to happen, etc... when a male nurse dropped by to take him down to the OR. Before heading down the hall he turns to me and says, "I've got my blankie, see ya soon Mum." then they head towards OR.
I puttered around the hop looking at the gift shop, talked to a friend of the family (also the kids godmother), than had to have a coffee and to stop at Timmy's in the Hop's food court at noon and no one standing in line was extremely odd, but pleasantly surprising. After I finished my coffee and read the paper this man sitting across from me, I headed back upstairs. The surgery wasn't over so I decided that I was gonna go for a little walk, I quickly ducked down to give the dentistry dept the insurance form than returned upstairs. I wasn't back 5 minutes when the surgeon called me. The doc explained that there were no problems with getting him to cooperate with the surgical team. Apparently, one of the back molars that had a hole in it was also abscessed and a piece broken off because of it - he said the part of the tooth that broke off inside his gum (which was removed) didn't look as bad as he had first thought. He cleaned out the the abscess and sutured the gum to prevent infection and from what he could tell from the tooth underneath it it wasn't affected. As for the other molar, he fixed it and filled it, than put a silver crown on it. He did notice there was a tiny cavity starting, so he fixed that one as well, all before applying fluoride and a sealant on his teeth.
After an hour or so, I was able to go into post-op to sit with him. No sooner did he hear me talking to the nurses, he called out "I want Mummy." He really didn't want to stay in the bed, so the nurse I was speaking to as they wheeled him out helped me get comfortable before handing over the boy. We sat in post-op for about half an hour just rocking when he mentioned that he wanted to go home. So after another 3 minutes, we rolled him down to the same floor as we started out on, waving bye to the nurse he flirted with earlier got ready and came home.
Once we were home (around 1455hrs), he headed straight for his bed. I followed up after him then straightening out my blankets he then climbs on mine. So I lounged on my bed with Willy curled up beside me then fell asleep. I wanted to take a nap too, but I wanted to keep an eye on him instead.
Now, the effects of today has worn off and he's back to his sweet loveable, mischievous self. So, now we wait until next year for a follow-up appointment. During this time, I'm looking for a new family dentist. This farting about not doing anything to help the child is beyond foolishness.
