That journal idea is brilliant! Can I ask how old Sharon is? I'm wondering because my 5-year-old is very sensitive and artistic, and she also makes art as a refuge. I could see a journal like that eventually being a great thing for her. (I'm afraid that school will be hard on her sweet, sensitive little soul.) Seems from your story like the journal gift came at the right time, and I'm wondering what that time (age) might be. Thanks for sharing. :)
Sharon's 11.5, most of her problems in school are the bullies. She's a very bright little girl, it's just her self-esteem has taken a real beating because of them.
If artwork or printing helps your daughter, do whatever you can to encourage it. It doesn't matter what age, if it works work with it :)
Agreed--we definitely encourage the art making, in all kinds of ways. The sand and stone idea is obviously too abstract for her now though, and I was wondering at what point a child can really get that. Understanding, of course, that all kids are different.
Oh, and I was also going to say....middle school age seems to be the toughest, in terms of kids being cruel and cliquey. From your experience would you say that was mostly true?
