I entered the building just like any other work day. Preparing myself for another hum drum experience. When out of the back of the office I hear a scream of a woman " NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Then more cries of terror" NO NO NOOOOOOO" "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD". Then an explosion. I rushed up the stairs, mind realing as to what could be going on. I reached the lobby to find it full of onlookers. Tears falling, heads held in disbelief, hearts tearing apart to the vision they are taking in. As my eyes adjust to the television, I am instantly drawn into the terror. Then a media fopaa ,an instant replay. Show us the horror again, The aircraft banks hard left and then BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM the side of the bldg becomes and inferno.screams continue either from the tv or from the people in the lobby they all blend together as the bldg is engulfed with flames "NO NO NOT ANOTHER ONE OHH MY GOD " The sight of debri that once stood for organization and hard work now merely fuel. Fuel of terror that rips through everyones hearts that witness it.
Then i get focused on the other bldg. and thoughts of the instant deaths of the people in those immpacted floors. In one second, lives doing a productive days work, sharing a cup of coffee, tellings of the history of the night before. How friends chat about their children grancdchildren. The new girl with the short skirt."How could she". The boss discussing with his staff how the work load is to be distributed for the day."This need to be done by EOB today" The friends discussing quiting smoking "I will quit tomorrow" The husband realizing the relationship slipping away from him"I will tell her I love her when i get home" Then....nothing,, death,, swift and sure as the 90 tons of aircraft explodes thru the office bldg. The screams ,not being for sure if they ever ceased, rise again. OHHHHH MYYYYYYY GAAAAAAAAWD. Feeling dizzy I sit down. "I felt a great disturbance in the force" for lack of a better explination of my feeling at that time.
Then the reports jockey for position in front of the cameras to assure us of our fears. Scurrying about like ants to a fallen drop of icecream on the sidewalk. Until the first bldg. starts to collapse then they show their true abilities to help the public by running.
As the top of the first bldg starts to collapse i grab my chair for the room shifts under me. My own balance is shifted to the shock of such a great bldg falling. The sheer force of the 100+ story monster, once a symbol of American economic grace and power. Now merely , a giant tomb for thousands falling to wall street. In a cloud of dust, steel, concrete and office supplies. Tho not present I felt the ground shake. Closing my eyes briefly i see God falling to his knees to shake the world to the travisty befeel his children. Mourning the innocent lives that have just been taken , and in the many more that he sees dying.
There are many events in our lives that sculpt us. That create character. That mold out very souls into the people we are. Like the first time you ride a bike. The first time you make the honor role. The death of a member of the family. Many great events that can change the outlook of your psychie. This is one of those events. Really giving you a look into the reality of our existance. Redefining the issues we hold so true. Peace, freedom, our rights as a nation. Our rights as humans,to live unafraid. To live together as a nation of nations.
As I watch the rescue units go in to help the wounded. I think of a friend, and the daily job he preforms, he is a paramedic. Everyday helping those in need. Using his vast knowledgeand quick reflexes to keep people alive. His contribution to the world is great. He doesnt even see it as a valiant effort on his behalf. It is merely a job that needs to be done. That is what makes him a true hero in my eyes. Hundreds of people just like my friend go into the site to "do merely a job" and save as many people as they can. Working diligently, they go at it. Pushig aside their personal fears and anguish. Not showing their devastation. They turn into robots without emotion.
Then,,,, as if saddend by its partners demise, the second bldg releases its power over gravity and collapses next to its fallen sibling of steel. Relinquishing it's space in the sky. Unable to stand without its lifelong companion. They lay on the ground in heaps of rubble. Smoldering piles of what used to be life. Now merely images of death and destrucion.
