So: I had the long-awaited job interview/assessment centre yesterday.
Oh the whole: yeah, I think I did pretty well. I'm fairly sure I didn't do anything hideously awful that would automatically disqualify me from the job. And that's half the battle! Earlier this morning I did a post-mortem on my performance (basically, thinking over how I did yesterday and making notes: stuff I did well, stuff that could have been better, etc.). Anyway, having formally gone over how I did -- yeah, not too bad. I made a light Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy joke during my interview -- showed that I had a sense of humour without making them think I'm some kind of crazy eccentric who tells jokes compulsively. One of the panel members laughed even though she'd been trying to keep a stern interview face up. Basically, it went like this:
Interviewer: Describe a time where you were swamped with a lot of work and how you coped with it (my paraphrase, obviously).
Me: Well, first I remember what it says on the cover of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy... (I deliberately paused for effect and the interviewer laughed because she knew what I was about to say) Don't panic!
The bad is that there were two people in my group who were already working in the Department -- eek! That said, I don't think that they're necessarily going to get the jobs... Sure, a lot of interview processes are fixed, but I have a feeling that in this Department they actually try to be fair. And I don't actually know what the other interview groups are like -- perhaps there was some spectacular potential employee in another group.
Ah, well. Such is life. C'est la vie. And other such cliches. In any event I'll be studying and being in a play. Which, by the way, I am super nervous about because the company that's putting it on is hardcore. I mean, seriously: just being around actors as good as some of the ones in this production is enough to lift your game.
Anyway, I'm seeing Detective Dee tonight. That's the historical costume drama about the Chinese detective tasked by the Empress to track down the killer who's rubbing out high level civil servants. Presumably so she can give this public benefactor gold and treasure. Wait, have I made that joke on livejournal before?
