I should start out by saying I grew up at FNUC then known to all as SIFC, my mother both brothers and myself have all obtained higher education in that institution, and when it started it was a beautiful thing. The idea of an aboriginal university geared towards first nations people and catering to the special needs of first nations students, utopian in its conception.
I remember when SIFC encapsulated several offices around collage west, and the building was still being drawn up. I was there when they turned the first soil. I was also there when the mis management at the hands of Wes Stevenson went down, and I will genuinely celebrate when he is found guilty.
When the FSIN went in and locked down the building throwing out everyone in power, sent in RCMP auditors and tried to flush the badness from the building there was hope. There was a hope that the institution so crippled by ego-centric assholes who wiped their asses with the students tuition money, would heal, and through healing be able to be reborn. That hope is gone.
I convocated last year through FNUC (although also through the U of R which is my only saving grace), and I thought that it may not be around much longer. A building mired in toil, created in pain, the promise of an entire people, could it withstand the shitstorm that came with the fireing of Mr. Stevenson?
It looked like maybe. It looked like maybe until Mr. Westerlund former CFO was dismissed (and whatever you happen to feel about him, I have had run ins with him and know he is a racist who had no business being in that institution in the first place). Mr Westerlund leaked substantial information to the media, information that was damning to the replacements that were installed after the initial cleansing of the university. While aboriginal politics are about as backwards and old boys club as one can get, we have to account for the lack of education and the fact that aboriginals attempting to run a government without the proper tools will of course fail.
So Westerlund leaked, and the shitstorm started again. Now could FNUC weather another firestorm? After academic sensure, after the acreditations committee held off on renewing their degree granting status, after so much money had gone missing, after the disease had spread throughout the institution? The answer my friends is no. The minister of education pulled 5.6 million dollars in funding to the university as of April 1st. (note that that is square in the beginning of exam time) Can the university take it?
NO.
On it's last leg after the original shitstorm it couldn't handle another one, or the secondary case of fraud going on at a satillite office of the university in which the former head of the students association was brought up on fraud for over 35,000 of misapropriated funds.
I will not miss the pain that has been caused through the years by SIFC/FNUC, I will miss the idea that was concieved a long long time ago by some very wonderful people, and I share in their pain as we watch a dream that is older than me (SIFC having been started before I was born) burn up in flames at the hands of selfish bastards.
And that is why I say so long, thanks for all the fish.
