Giving thanks

This has been a strange year, and the sudden death of Marc Brincivalli (bootglove ) yesterday brought things into sharp focus for me.

I haven't whined about it, but my business has been really, really bad. I've earned about 20% of what I earned last year and I've had to go deep into my reserves. But things seem to be picking up a little.

While I'm healthy, getting health insurance was a rude awakening. I had a mechanically-induced stroke three years ago from a chiropractic manipulation gone bad and that was enough to blackball me with the insurers. With the help of a really good insurance agent, I was able to find coverage through a business association for just slightly more than the COBRA coverage which expired. Congress can't pass meaningful heath insurance reform quickly enough.

But enough negatives; I have a lot of positives to be thankful for.

Earlier this summer I met Otter J. I found his profile on a 'social networking site', noticed that he was a fellow biker, and sent him a message about going out for a ride sometime. We hit it off on our first meeting. I don't know where our relationship is going to go, but the Otter is a great guy and I'm thrilled that I can count him among my friends.

Since I work from home and spend a lot of time here, it's great that I really love my house. I feel goofy admitting it, but I actually miss my house when I go away for a few days.

It's simple to transfer my business phone line to my cell phone, and that little thing has given me the freedom to jump on my motorcycle during business hours and just wander off anywhere I please. And since I had a lot of free time this year, I was able to get in about 3,500 miles of short trips on 'Das Bike' in 2009.

I have many more things to be thankful for; finding Live Journal, good friends, reconnecting with some of my relatives, etc. but I'm going to cut this short and get started making Thanksgiving dinner. Happy Thanksgiving to all my American LJ buddies; I hope everyone has a great day and safe travels.
