Game: Sunnydale OSI
Who: Laili and Wesley
When: Thursday evening
Where: Laili's house, then the Italian restaurant

Wesley was driving to where Laili lived. He had found a nice Italian restaurant that was hidden away in a corner of the town, and it looked good to him. Most people liked Italian, so he figured it was a safe choice. When he pulled up to Laili's home, he walked to her door and rang the door bell.

Laili answered the door wearing a classic black dress and pearls. Her long hair flowed down her back, and had tiny pearls and flowers woven into it in old-fashioned romantic style. Her house was small, but kept up well. Amir the owl was visible on a perch in the living room. "How lovely to see you," she said when she opened the door

Wesley smiled when he saw her. He was wearing a black suit, figuring that she would dress up. "You look lovely tonight," he said.

"And you look quite handsome. Would you like to come in for a while, or do you want to go right to the restaurant?"

"We can do either," Wesley said. "It's up to you." He looked inside, noticing that she had a lovely home. "You home looks quite nice."

Laili got her wrap, and headed for the door. "Let's go to the restaurant now, and we can come back here later for a nightcap." She turned to her owl a moment, and spoke with him. "Amir, we're going out. You be good."

Amir flapped his wings and made a "HoooOOoo" sound in answer.

"He says we shouldn't stay out too late," Laili said, with a grin. "Since we both have work in the morning. But what does he know, he's an owl..." She laughed a bit, and closed the door behind her.

Wesley smiled when Laili told him what Amir said. He led Laili to his car after she shut her door and opened the passenger door for her. His car was a basic four-door blue sedan. "Do you like Italian?" he asked. "I found a little restaurant in a corner of the town that had good recommendations."

Laili smiled when he opened the door for her. What a gentleman.

"Thank you, Wesley. And yes- I like Italian food."

The cuisine of the Mediteranian nations was always appealing. Once settled in the passenger's seat, she buckled up and looked around the car.

"Do you ever want to drive on the wrong side of the road?" she asked, knowing that the lanes were reversed in England.

Wesley settled into the driver's seat, put on his seat belt, and started the car. As he pulled back onto the road, he said, "Sometimes I get the urge. I haven't forgotten and tried to yet, thankfully."

The restaurant wasn't too far from where Laili lived, so it wouldn't take them long to arrive there.

"I'm glad that you haven't," Laili said, with a small laugh. This was pleasant, this going out to dinner with someone she liked.

"What made you relocate to America, anyhow? I'm certainly glad you did."

Another lie, Wesley thought to himself and sighed internally. He came to the United States officially as a transfer to the OSI division in Sunnydale. He wanted to be out from under his father's shadow, and he felt that coming to the United States was the best way to do so. However, he couldn't tell Laili all of this.

"I felt the need for a change," Wesley said, concentrating on the road. "I could have stayed in England all of my life without much of a challenge, and I wanted to experience something different, something challenging."

"What made you come to California? I'm glad that you came out here as well."

"California is such a beautiful place," Laili said. "I wanted to see it. And there was a position open at the zoo here in Sunnydale that paid well - and rents here are so reasonable. It seemed like the perfect move."

She smiled. "I've certainly been enjoying it here."

"Real estate here is very reasonable," Wesley said. As he pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant, he said, "If the school decides to keep me, I was thinking of buying a small house next year," as he put the car into park. He got out of the car and went to open Laili's door.

Laili got out of the car, and smoothed her dress. "Thank you," she said to Wesley. "You're quite a gentleman."

She thought his old-fashioned manners were quite charming.

"I do try my best," Wesley said with a smile as she got out of the car. He had been date from a young age that a man treats his date with the utmost respect, and it had stuck.

Wesley led her inside of the restaurant, opening the door to it in the process. The hostess sat them down at a table and took their drink orders. "So," Wesley said as he picked up a menu, "have you ever been here before? I've heard that it is quite good."

"I haven't been here before, no. It looks very nice though."

Laili opened the menu and looked over the choices. "Mm.. chicken marsala over linguini sounds good to me. What are you going to have?"

"I am thinking about ordering the Fettuccine Giovanni," Wesley said as he looked over the menu. "It's my favorite dish." He did hope that this place had good food. He didn't want his date with Laili to be ruined by bad food.

"I've never tried it," Laili said.

She placed her order when the waiter came over, and after they had ordered, turned back to Wesley.

"I'll give you a taste of mine if you let me taste yours..." she said. If she was aware of any other connotations to that statement, it wasn't apparent from her innocent smile.

Wesley didn't catch any hidden meaning from the taste comment. "That sounds good," he said.

A waiter came by and took their orders and set down their drinks. The waiter then took their menus and left for the kitchen, presumably to give their orders to the cook.

"I hope I can ask you something without offending you," Laili said, unsure of how to word her question.

She sipped from her wine, and contemplated the wording. "It's just that.. you seem like such a charming man. You've got a lovely accent, you're quite handsome and educated and your manners are perfect. I was just wondering why you haven't a girlfriend already. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I'm very pleased that you're single. But I would have thought some American girl would have jumped at the chance to date a man like you. So why are you single?"

She was curious about that, indeed. It was a blunt question to ask- but she wondered if perhaps there was some underlying secret to the answer. Maybe he had some terrible habit, or spent long hours on the job, or collected dung as a hobby or some other undesirable quality. Best to find out now.

Wesley wasn't offended by the question. He took a sip from his drink before answering. "I'm normally shy, actually. I can lecture in front of a group of people all day, but one on one I've never been that good at. When I came to America, I wanted to get away from that. Going out to the Bronze was my first step at it."

He also worked odd hours at his "primary" job, but he wanted to ease her into that, instead of just blurting it out on a first date. Luckily, since he didn't have the primary slayer, it only took up one or two nights a week of his time. He didn't want to think about what would happen if it was passed to Gwen, God forbid.

"I'm glad you weren't too shy to ask me to dinner," Laili said, reaching across the table to pat his hand gently.

Though he didn't ask, she added her opinions on the subject. "I think I'm still single because I'm strange," she said. "Men don't exactly find a girl who lives with an owl all that appealing. And I tend to talk about my conservation projects, and work- which, well, if you're not into animals or learning about animals can get boring I suppose."

She looked down into her wine glass. "Of course, it's only recently that I've considered dating again, anyhow. Since my husband passed on, it was a while before I felt ready."

"I don't find you strange at all," Wesley said honestly. "Most people have pets. Your's just happens to be an owl. I like hearing about your work. I find it interesting."

He was surprised to hear that she had been married, but he managed to not show much of it. She seemed young to be a widow, but who was he to wonder? "I'm sorry to hear about your husband," he said.

"Thank you. It was a while ago now, though- back in Malaysia. I was married young, that is the tradition there. After the death.. I had to get away. There was nothing left for me in my native land, so I began to travel. Eventually, I came here."

Laili sipped her wine, and admitted somewhat shyly "This is my first real date. So forgive me if I don't know all the rules of conduct. I'm winging it from what I've gleaned from my co-workers, books, and televison shows."

Wesley smiled when he heard that she hadn't dated, either. "It's been a few years for me," he admitted. "Maybe we can just figure out dating together." He was hopeful that, since he thought it was going well, there would be a second date after this.

"I would like that very much," Laili said. She reached across the table again, taking his hand and holding it.

"And if we make any mistakes at it, I'm sure we'll forgive each other the awkwardness of this all. And Amir likes you, so that's a good sign."

"I'm more than willing to forgive anything, although I doubt you'll make any mistakes," Wesley said.

"Amir likes me? Well, then that is a good sign."

"He does indeed," Laili said. "Else he would have caused quite a fuss when I left with you. He's very protective of our home- he considers that his 'nest'. He's good as can be outside the home- he's great with children, and helps with the demonstrations. But at home, he can be quite the terror when someone he doesn't like is at the door."

She shook her head. "He hates the postman for some reason. He hoots and shrieks and flaps up a storm whenever I get a package."

Wesley couldn't help but laugh when hearing about Amir's hatred of the postman. "I've heard of dogs becoming protective of people, but never owls. You have a very special owl if he cares that much for you."

Laili smiled. "He's very special indeed. Like a child to me."
