afastmachine was interested in some tutorials, and I took forever but here they are! I didn't save all of my source images for these, so some of them are using the base after it's been resized to 100x100, but with most of these I didn't resize until the very end.

001.
I wanted to use Lana's gold dress from the Ride music video, but I couldn't find any caps where the mic isn't in her face, so I found this on google images and cropped it down to this:

002.
I did this a little backwards, but I applied a color fill layer (d9b04e) at 100% underneath my base layer, and masked the background out on my base layer. The mask worked better before it was resized, everything looks a little crunchy when it's resized down to 100x100 so I apologize for that. :)

003.
I wanted Lana to look a little faded and blend into the background color more, so I set a color fill layer (4c4800) to screen at 75% on top of my base layer.

004.
I liked the way things were looking but I wanted a little more contrast and to bring out the life of the colors a little bit. Instead of going back and tweaking things I decided to just pile on more layers. I used a curves layer (without adding any points to edit the curve) set set to soft light at 75%.

005.
At this point I decided I really like the background color and decided I wanted it to feel sort of foggy/misty and have Lana really blend with the background. I added a color fill layer set (I used the eyedropper tool to figure out what color the background was, e9cb3e) to normal at 25%.

006.
At first I was thinking I was going to try to add some more bright lighting in to Lana since I had lost some with my attempt at fogginess, but instead I decided to balance out the balance of light and dark with some textures in the background and foreground.
I added this texture from pandavirus on screen at 100% and resized it a litte bit. I duplicated and inverted the original mask I used on Lana and used it on this layer.

007.
I wanted to add more lightness to the foreground, so I added this texture from planets bend between us on screen at 100%.

008.
Things were looking a little too clean to me, so I decided to add a grunge texture. It didn't add much but it just seemed right to me. I added this texture (I'm sorry, I'm not sure where this came from or who made it!) on screen at 100%.

009.
I was happy with things now and was ready to resize. I copy merged all of my layers and pasted, then resized to 100x100. I wanted to sharpen things up, so I used smart sharpen on my copy merged layer.

001.
I cropped this image from lanadelreyfan.com and resized it down to 200x200.

002.
I added a color fill layer (497d1b) on normal a 100% and masked out any areas that covered Lana.

003.
The darker colors on Lana seemed too dark and stood out too much from the background, so I added another color fill layer (497d1b) on lighten at 30%.

004.
I knew I wanted some white to contrast with the background and echo the white of her dress, and I wanted a floral element too. I added this image, resized it, and masked over certain areas to form a "mound" of flowers.

005.
The flowers looked a little on the blue side compared to Lana and the background, so I clipped a selective adjustment layer to the flowers layer.
Neutrals: + 45 Yellow

006.
Less blue now, but super dark so I clipped a levels adjustment layer to the flowers layer to lighten them up.
0 ; 1.00; 225

007.
The petals are bright enough but the leaves are really dark in the shadow-y areas, so to brighten them up I clipped a color fill layer (497d1b) to the flowers layer on lighten at 40%.

008.
I'm a sucker for grunge, and I wanted more dimension to the background. I added this texture from royalepsds on screen at 100%.

009.
I copy merged my layers, pasted and resized to 100x100. Things looked a little blurry so I used smart sharpen.

001.
I used this image as my base. I cropped it down a little (1 to 1 ratio) but didn't resize it just yet.

002.
My lizard brain was worried about the base and how coloring the icon was going to go based on the inspiration I had chosen for a challenge, so I used a gradient map adjustment layer.
It's just the default "Copper" gradient map set to soft light at 50%.

003.
Things were a little too orange for my taste for the coloring I was going for, so I clipped a hue/saturation adjustment layer to the gradient map, but only did +4 for hue.

004.
I liked the warmth in the image but wanted the shadows to be much cooler in tone and I wanted the image to look a little more flat? I applied another gradient map adjustment layer (Copper again), set it to reverse, and set it to soft light at 100%

005.
So in step 4 I wanted to the shadows to be cooler - I clipped a hue/saturation adjustment layer to the new gradient map. (Hue -180)

006.
I'm a very wishy-washy person so I decided the gradients had made the image too washed out and I wanted to pump in some more dramatic shadows, so I added a curves adjustment layer (with no points added) set to soft light at 100%.

007.
To get the color scheme I wanted, I added a color fill layer (1742ee) and masked out any areas covering Lana.

008.
I was happy with the basic composition so far, but wanted to work on the coloring. I added a selective color adjustment layer. Clearly I was not very patient looking at the numbers below, lol.
Reds: 0; +50; +31; 0
Cyans: +100; 0; -100; 0
BLues: +100; +15; -100; 0

009.
I wanted Lana to really contrast with the blue background, so I decided to make everthing about her seem warmer compared to the cool blue. To do this I used another selective colors layer to mess with the shadows.
Whites: 0; 0; -100; 0
Neutrals: +55; +15; +10; 0
Blacks: -25; -8; +100; 0

010.
At this point I lost my mind and decided the colors were too dull... so another selective color layer. (I masked this layer so it only adusts Lana's hair, earrings and top.)
Yellows: -96; +28; +100; 0

011.
At this point I figured I was done coloring and ready to move onto textures, so I copy merged everything and resized to 100x100.

012.
I'm the type of person who like to try out a few textures just to see what happens. I knew I wanted some grunge and a sort of grungy/distressed look, so I added this texture by planets bend between us, inverted it and on soft light at 100%.

013.
Everything was too warm for the coloring I was going for, so I clipped a color fill layer (00eaff) to the texture, set to soft light at 100%.

014.
I wanted a painty look, so I added this texture
from planets bend between us. I rotated it, resized it, inverted it and set it to screen at 100%.

015.
I was really happy with how things looked at step 14 but this wasn't the color palette I needed for a challenge, so I clipped a hue/saturation layer to the paint texture to change it to a more magenta color.
Hue: -180

016.
I wanted a little bit more purple and felt the icon was missing something, so I added this texture on screen at 100%.

017.
To make the texture purple, I clipped a color fill layer (ee17aa) set on multiple at 100%

018.
I added a selective color adjustment layer to bring out the colors a little more.
Yellows: 0, 0, +45, 0
Blues: -33, 0, 0, 0
Magentas: -, +24, +50, 0

019.
I copy merged my layers, pasted and resized to 100x100, and used a smart sharpen filter.

001.
I cropped this cap from grande_caps to a 500x500 canvas at first, but I didn't save a .psd at that size.

002.
I knew I wanted this to have a painty feel. Usually when I want things to feel a little flatter and like someone painted with broad strokes I'll apply the a coppper gradient map on soft light, which is what I did here at 50%.

003.
Then I added another copper gradient map, on reverse and set it to soft light at 100%.

004.
I had the flat feeling I wanted, but the gradient maps had made everything really brown. I wanted Janelle's shirt to look crisp and white, so to combat this I clipped a Hue/Saturation layer (hue: -180) to the second copper gradient map. Looking at it now I wish I had masked off Janelle's head/arms/hands because I lost too much of her skin tone. :(

005.
Still going for a crisp white shirt, I added a curves layer to brighten things up and add a little contrast.

006.
I wanted some negative space, so I added a white color fill layer and masked it so that only Janelle appeared.

007.
I think at this point I realized I lost too much dimension on Janelle, so I added the default black and white gradient map set to multiply on 100%.

008.
I was ready to add my textures, starting with this one (I think it's from pandavirus) set to multiply at 100% and masked around Janelle.

009.
I decided I wanted Janelle to be black and white so she would really stand out when I added some color ful textures, so I added the default black and white gradient map on normal at 100%.

010.
I inverted this texture (from burnedbreads) and set it to screen at 100%.

011.
I added the default black and white gradient map on normal at 100% again.

012.
Time for painty vibes! I added this texture, set it to multiply at 100% and masked it so that Janelle's head and arms popped.

013.
I wanted the texture to be a maroon color, so I clipped a hue/saturation (hue: +180) adustment layer to it.

014.
I added this texture (from hinretro), and set it to screen at 100%.

015.
I added this texture (if you know who made this please let me know!), and set it to exclusion at 100%.

016.
I wanted this texture to be a light blue to contrast with the maroon texture, so I clipped a color fill layer (582404) to the last textue and set it to multiply on 100%. And that's it!
