Christmas Time is Here!

Dec 23, 2008 13:56

I should be working out right now, or rather, getting ready to do so. I promised myself I'd go at 2pm, and here I at 1:57, sitting on my butt and typing a journal entry. Oh well, I have all day, right? 2:30, most definitely.

Anyway, my sister and I, in all our spare time (as I have quit work and school is over) have become obsessed with bri_chan  and Rain's internet comic, When Curiosity met Insanity(I'd like to link this, but its a community and I'm not entirely sure how to do that). It's a really cute comic-that should by all rights be made into a movie-with great interpretations of the Alice and Mad Hatter characters. Bri Chan is also really good at drawing in the "Disney" style.

Its somewhat AU, as the premise involves Alice running away from home and landing in a Kingdom Hearts/Disneyland World where all of the characters meet and interact with one another. And she's somewhere between 18-21, rather than 12-14. Its not clear to me whether or not she has already visited Wonderland in this universe, or if what happens in the Alice and Wonderland Disney movie applies at all. She seems to have prior knowledge of the Mad Hatter, however, before she encounters him in the comic. She also is friends with the March Hare, but this could be due to prior events in this universe that aren't depicted in the comic. WHATEVER, I'm game to suspend disbelief.

The story centers around a love story between Alice and The Mad Hatter. I know, I know, when I first heard about it my reaction was laugh at the ridiculousness of it. Before I had really done any research into this "ship manifesto" or even seen the comic, I wrote off the phenomena as some perverse act of a group of unstable fan girls, not unlike the works of Disney_Fan01(though I will admit her comic is quite enjoyable too, as hard as it is to watch Treasure Planet's Long John Silver get cozy with a sweet young thang). I've seen similar goings on in the fan fiction world, with strange/sickening pairings such as Cinderella/Smee (pulled that one out of the air, actually. But you get the idea). It seems like some fans are out to torture with repulsive mental images rather than create any sort of worthwhile piece of work. I felt this way especially when I saw the first image of Alice/Mad Hatter make-out fan art. I have to admit I couldn't look at it in a larger view than thumbnail, because the idea of those two together seemed too weird. Even for me, a fan of obscure pairings.

But this was only because I had the Disney cartoon in mind. The cartoon depicts the Mad Hatter as biologically 50-70 years old, and Alice as Lewis Caroll intended her for the story, 12-14. If these two images of the characters were to get together it'd be as ironic as it is wrong(because supposedly Lewis Caroll was a child molestor, or atleast had a Michael Jackson-esque interest in children). But bri chan and rain, the two ladies behind the phenomenon, are not weirdos, atleast not in an unhealthy sense ;-).
Bri Chan(and Rain, I think) works at Disneyland, formerly as a ride operator and now as an animator. Because of this most fortunate proximity to the characters, these two were able to observe certain tendencies that most parkgoers would have never had the time to do.

From my extensive "research", I've observed that 90% of the actors chosen to play the Mad Hatter at both Disney theme parks are young men, from anywhere between 25-30. Just take a look at this cutie:

Adorable, no? And if I'm not mistaken, this is one of my favorite actors. I've watched a few videos of Mad Hatters at Disneyland and this guy is by far the cutest and one of the funniest. But not as funny as the one Bri Chan calls "psycho hatter". Anyway, he proves my point.

The actresses for Alice are within the same age range, but happen to rival the Princesses in beauty.

(This is an adorable picture, btw. Just in case you weren't sure.)

The Mad Hatter and Alice are constantly around one another at the parks(infact, its nigh impossible to catch one without the other, or so I have come to understand). Despite their constant bickering and the Mad Hatter's assurance that Alice is despicable company, they don't mind being "touchy feely" in a very cutesy, childlike manner. They really are very cute together, and as Bri Chan mentioned in her essay explaining the ship, are more realistic than many of the couples at Disneyland. They also have an aura of mystery accompanying their obvious sexual tension because they aren't an established couple, yet definetly have an unspoken attraction.

So this comic, When Curiosity met Insanity, plays off the theme park characters rather than the animated movie's or even Lewis Caroll's. Yet the depiction of the Mad Hatter in the comic changes a bit from the theme park in that he is given a real name (Reginald Theophilius III) and has a personailty that encompasses all of those displayed by the Disneyland Mad Hatter actors, according to Bri Chan and Rain. Alice, as she is at the theme parks, is somewhat overshadowed by Reginald's "dramatic" performance, yet is still colorful in her own right. Infact, Bri Chan and Rain have reworked her character some to make her a little more cynical and witty,a far cry from the demure, soft-spoken voice of reason from the animated movie.

The story was started in 2006 and last updated a few months ago, yet I'm still eager to see the rest and have faith that it will be finished. These two have created quite an addictive couple out of two characters that I would have never before put together. They've also awakened a love of Alice in Wonderland in my sister and I, and are partially the reason I'm having a tea-party for my going-away get-together. My sister volunteered to be The Mad Hatter and I've been working dilligently on her hat.

So tomorrow I'll be departing to visit my grandparents for christmas. I will most definitely have my lap-top, though internet is questionable as I'll be in a small(and I mean pop of 1,000) town. We'll see how it goes.

bri chan, when curiosity met insanity, christmas, mad hatter/alice
