just in the nick of time

7:19 PM 9/23/10 · I feel really bad about this. Due to a host of reasons, I neglected to give you folks the heads up about tonite's (Thursday) episode of The Vampire Diaries. It's been a few episodes coming so if you're not familiar with the series let me sum up.

Small town with a dark past. Nobody in the modern world, for the most part, believes in vampires but 2 from the town's founding families have returned. There's a whole tonnage of drama relating to this, it's a cool show, but how last season ended leads directly to what's going down tonite.

A device was made in ancient times, combination of technology & magic, that immobilizes vampires. The modern town council who know the signs and are aware there's vamps in town again, have reassembled this device. At a town celebration they activate it and everyone that convulses in pain and is rendered into paralysis they gather up and toss into a building they burn down later. However, 2 people who are most definitely not vampires are also taken down when this happens. The elder, the mayor of the town, is torched with the rest of the vamps but the son survives.

The question plagued me for all of a few seconds before I made the logical leap, cuz these days you really can't have one without the other, that these must be werewolves. The thing of it is that they haven't been transforming and the seires has been going on long enough for several cycles of full moons so that was a bit of a mytery...

...until last week.

For the father's memorial his long lost brother, black sheep of the family sorta deal, comes back to town. Bonds with the teenaged son quickly but the guy's unusually fit and has moves no human can manage. Both of these 2 have been noticed by the 2 main vampires of the series as they're naturally curious why the men of this family were also effected by the device. They note the strength and are increasingly fixated.

What happened last week is that the uncle was looking for his brother's moonstone, a family hierloom of sorts. He couldn't find it but when the son was alone long enough he went to his father's hideen safe and took it out, pocketing it.

Commercials for tonite have mentioned werewolves. Also mentioned the series twist on the lore, being specifically in this case that the bite of a werewolf can apparently kill a vampire.

7:35 PM 9/23/10 · 25 minutes and counting.

8:51 PM 9/23/10 · Okay, the werewolves aren't of the humanoid variety upon transformation. Full on wolves. The family heirloom apparently is designed to prevent the transformations, in the house safe it essentially effected the father and son respectively...

...the uncle wants it because he is changing with the cycles of the moon and wants to stop.
