Yoona believes the key to being cool is a black leather jacket.
A/N: For

The leather jacket is simple: a solid black with only one zipper, a nice shiny gold color. Were the glass of the window not there, Yoona would’ve reached out and grabbed the thick material and wondered about the smooth feel of the leather between her long slender fingers.
Instead she merely watches and dreams.
It’s her third time stopping by the store after work and the third time she decides to walk away without stepping through the doorway.
And, unbeknownst to her, it’s also the third time she fails to notice the storekeeper watch her go, interest smoldering in her casual gaze.

Kwon Yuri is sexy, undeniably so, with a distinct leanness in her body, muscles removing whatever doubt of fat and laziness one could attempt to slander with. There’s a boldness that comes with it all, a lack of fear and an excess of daring, a blatant display of strength that Yoona can only wish she had.
Kwon Yuri is a lesbian and she could care less what anyone else thought about the fact. She’ll love who she wants and sleep with who she wants and Yoona can only watch and pine pathetically because she too is a lesbian and is so desperately in love.
But Yoona has none of that courage or strength and sometimes she feels as plain and dull as the white on the many sundresses that she owns.
Yoona is not a model. She spends her time running errands, bringing clothes here and there and if she's lucky, she may get to speak a sentence with Yuri, asking her something mundane like if the clothes fit alright or not, despite the fact that the measurements have always been perfect. Yoona is nothing like the models Yuri hangs out with, charisma in every glance and an innate and seemingly perfect sensuality in the sway of their hips with every walk.
That's why Yoona needs the jacket. She needs something that will change how she looks and feels. Maybe, if she can come off as cool and confident, Yuri will let her get a word in before she is rejected completely.
So she ends up in front of the store yet again, eyeing the jacket wistfully.
Just as she makes to leave again, like all those other times, the door opens, stopping her in her tracks. The girl leaning against the opened door doesn't look all that much older than her. She's dressed in the sort of clothes Yuri would wear and Yoona wishes she could pull off. Tight leather pants that conform around long model-like legs, an opened leather jacket with more studs and zippers than needed, an obscure band t-shirt and multiple earrings and studs, chain necklaces, leather bracelets and wallet chains.
Yoona manages a hesitant bow in greeting. "Hello."
"You want to try it on this time or are you just going to leave again?"
Yoona blinks. "I'm sorry?"
"Every time you pass by here you stare at that jacket and then leave. You can try it on you know."
"Oh no, that's fine."
"Come on, try it on." The taller girl walks up and takes Yoona's hand gently tugging her towards the door. " It's not like I'm swamped with business or anything."
As the girl opens the door she stops with a sudden realization and turns towards Yoona with a smile. “I'm Sooyoung, by the way.”
Yoona wants to protest but Sooyoung doesn't look like the kind of person who will take no for an answer.
Sooyoung takes her to the mannequin and quickly removes the jacket, pressing the item into Yoona’s hands. The slickness of the material feels just like she expects it to and she savors the touch. Yoona stands there uncertain as she stares at the jacket in her hands. After dreaming to have it for so long, she's rather overwhelmed with what to do next. Sooyoung nudges her towards the dressing room in the back.
When Yoona finally puts on the jacket, she hesitates to look in the mirror. But Sooyoung's presence is there to remind her otherwise so she dares a peek. And immediately frowns. There’s a short pause as she stares at her reflection quizzically, her frown deepening with each passing second.
She doesn't know what she's waiting for but the image in the mirror is nothing like she hoped. There's so shift in feelings, and nothing about her seems admirable or cool. She's just the same plain girl she wants so desperately to leave behind. The jacket clashes poorly with her white dress making Yoona feel more clownish then anything else.
“What’s wrong?” Sooyoung tilts her head in question as she looks at the mirror. “Not what you were hoping?”
“Something like that,” Yoona replies, despondent.
“Well we have others. Feel free to try on the entire store.”
“No, it’s fine,” Yoona says, with a sad shake of her head. “It was kind of stupid of me to want to wear it anyways.”
Yoona takes the jacket off and hands it to Sooyoung who doesn’t take it. Her eyes trace the disappointment in Yoona's eyes, trying to locate the origin.
“Care to talk about it? If you have a problem with my items you can tell me.”
Yoona suddenly feels very shy and doesn’t quite know how to explain her thoughts. How had it taken her this long to realize how foolish it is to assume a jacket would make her become cool, just like that? It's leather, not some magical artifact and her childish thoughts only further cement her place out of Yuri's league.
“I guess it just wasn’t what I was expecting.”
“Really? I think you look fine.”
“But I don’t want to look fine. I want...”
“You want?”
“I want to look cool,” Yoona mumbles.
Sooyoung observes her briefly before chuckling softly.
“Look, you’re going about this all wrong. Do you know why I dress the way I do?”
Yoona's first response would've been “because you're cool” but with the way the conversation is going, Sooyoung's answer probably doesn't coincide with Yoona's thoughts.
“Because I like it. Simple as that. I don’t think about anything else. What does it matter what anyone else thinks?”
Yoona gives a frustrated sigh. “It’s not that simple.”
“Isn’t it? Do you like this jacket?” Sooyoung takes the jacket from Yoona and holds it up.
“I guess?”
“Then don’t buy it.” Sooyoung sets it to the side on top of a rack of leather pants. “I have others, let me help you find something you'll actually like.”
Yoona shakes her head. “I don’t really need a jacket. I just need confidence.”
“A jacket isn’t going to give you that.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about. I mean, look at me.” Yoona gestures towards her knee length white dress. It's the kind of clothes she's been wearing all her life, if not for simplicity, than for a fondness for that kind of clothing. Things were so much more simpler during her childhood days, no worries about liking and being liked. “No one would ever give me the time of day if I went up to them like this.”
“What’s wrong with it? I think you look cute.”
“I don’t want to be cute. I want to be cool.”
“And that will make people like you?”
“Maybe not. But at least I’ll be able to ask Yuri out without stuttering the entire time.” Yoona mumbles to herself.
Sooyoung laughs at that, ears perking up at the name dropped. “Confessions are simple.”
“No they're not.”
“Look I’ll show you.”
Sooyoung walks up to Yoona, leaning in until their faces are nearly touching, making sure that she can't run away from her eyes. “Would you like to go to dinner sometime? Nothing fancy but I know a place with great food.”
“You’re only able to do that because you’re trying to prove a point," Yoona retorts, "it’s not like you really like me.”
“I do.”
Yoona's brow crumples in confusion. “Quit joking.
“I do. Really like you.”
The uncertainty continues to sit across Yoona's brow and Sooyoung wants to the tease the tenseness away with her fingers. The stiffness in Yoona's body screams the desire to flee, but Sooyoung maintains her closeness to keep Yoona against the wall.
“How can you be sure? You barely even know me.”
“Isn’t love like that? It’s the same with the jacket, you know. I like what I like. What does it matter if it's another woman or someone I don’t know. If I like them, doesn’t that mean I should try? So, what do you say?”
“I don’t even know you.” Yoona looks away from Sooyoung piercing gaze.
“So we’ll get to know each other.”
“But I like someone else," Yoona protests, her voice feeling weak to her ears.
“Then confess, see how she feels and then give me an answer. I can wait.”
Yoona feels like it’s foolish to continue this dangerous train of thought, but asks anyways. “And if Yuri and I are meant to be?”
“I'll deal with it. Binge on ice cream and romcoms until I can move on. So what will it be?”
Yoona’s breath catches. She's uncertain what she's currently seeing but it almost looks like Sooyoung is looking at her with love, if not affection. Yoona wonders if this is how her eyes shine when she stares at Yuri.
“I have to go.” Yoona quickly brushes by and hurries out of the store. Her sudden departure doesn't seem to bother Sooyoung at all as she watches her leave with a smile. She picks up the jacket from the rack where she had left it and places it back up on the mannequin facing the store window.
