World appears to still be here, what about you?

Well, the day after the end of the world. I don't know if you've all got 'em, but here there's a billboard or two by that Harold Camping guy who predicted the end of the world yesterday. (Oh, and in 1994. But he was really really really sure this time ( Read more... )

Dad had a sermon about that this morning. The saddest part about it is on a lot of these billboards and ads of the date of the so-called "rapture", they also included the following slogan, "The Bible Guarantees It." We fear that because of this a lot of people who don't understand are going to lose faith. Really, thought, the Bible guarantees just the opposite (Matthew 24:36).

As for the reaction, I don't know about Camping's group itself, but I found a really neat article on Yahoo about how groups in general react after a prophecy of the end of days doesn't come to pass: http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20110521/sc_livescience/whendoomsdayisntbelieversstruggletocope

That's one thing I never got. The very same Bible says nobody knows when. How does a person believe 100% in the second coming... but not that no one knows when?

Here's a Huffington Post article that has some interviews with some of the believers: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/22/may-21-judgment-day-may-22_n_865298.html

And yet another link, this one about Camping's own response. I would've just summarized it, but I like what his PR agent says, and you may want to see the accompanying video: http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110523/ts_yblog_thelookout/doomsday-prophet-followers-flabbergasted-world-didnt-end

All I see when hearing these predictions is the Simpsons episode where the people are going to be saved by the "leader" and taken up in a space ship thats kept inside the forbidden barn. The spaceship turns out to be basically a cardboard cutout built atop some sorta bike-propeller thing.

Yeah, that's a good one. I also think of the episode when Homer made doomsday predictions of his own, and one of them came true (or at least Homer thought so).
