15. Forgotten Season
JYJ originally wasn’t a group.
Twenty-five years ago, SM entertainment had meant to put Kim Junsu, Kim Jaejoong and Park Yoochun with a larger group and debut them as Super Junior. It had all been planned to the very last detail.
But then the screw up occurred-now, SM considers it the best thing that happened but at the time, Jaejoong remembers their manager screaming at them.
Junsu, Jaejoong and Yoochun had been put on a show to promote the debuting Super Junior as the subunit JYJ. After the producer had pushed for it and their manager hadn’t been there, they performed a full-length song, covering Balloons by Five Fingers.
They’ve practiced it before and managed to pull a more than decent version on the spot. The episode aired before the management even realized what happened. The editing department accidently cut out the Super Junior promotions and went straight to the three:
“hana, dul, ses…annyeonghaseyo i JYJ ibnida!” One, two, three…hello, this is JYJ!
Their fan base exploded overnight and that’s how their little subunit became a group of their own.
Jaejoong looks up their accidental debut stage video online and looks at his young pixilated face. Skin smooth without any wrinkles, lips full and red like a flower and eyes clean and intense. He turns to look at his reflection in the window.
It has been twenty-five years since Jaejoong was nineteen. It’s written all over his face.
Yunho would say it was a face of experience. A face of someone who’s gone through a lot but never let it bring them down.

TVXQ was originally supposed to be a group of five.
Four years ago, Jung Yunho, Shim Changmin and three others had been pulled from their separate groups to create a vocal powerhouse. One of the three had unluckily gotten into an accident, which required a long period of rehabilitation, and the other two had been shuffled into a different group after some consideration.
The K-pop scene had exploded with boy and girl groups, each other them hoping to be as successful as H.O.T. or Big Bang or JYJ. After lots of debates and disagreements, SMent decided to try a male duo.
And so TVXQ became just U-know Yunho and Max Changmin.
Maybe everyone had been waiting for something new or maybe the little mix up at their debut stage hadn’t been such a bad mix up.
Either way, the stage they were supposed to share with Kwon Boa had been cancelled last minute and instead of singing their main debut song, a love ballad, they plunged into an intense dance track.
Overnight, their concept went from cute and young to mature and fierce. Overnight, they became a sensation.
Yunho looks up their accidental debut stage and looks at his face in high definition quality. The faint trace of his scars and the unevenness of the foundation at those areas could be seen. The shine of his lip-gloss and the dark of his eyeliner made his face look fake. He turns to look at his reflection in the window.
It has been almost three years since Yunho debuted. And he worries that he was still too fresh, still too young.
Jaejoong would say that he was jealous of that youthful face. A face of someone who is ready to take on the music entertainment and even the world.
