Taps the microphone...is this thing on?
Whether anyone is still reading this matters not this morning. La Wepa must report her most recent achievement of the bellydance variety.
I trundled off to my bellydance class on Monday evening in a good mood...hell, going to class always puts me in a good mood for two general reasons: 1) my insanity is understood there and 2) in the immortal and sagacious words of Lady Gaga, we just dance.
The end of class is always my favorite. That's the time where our instructor (who is AWESOME) spends some time with whoever wants to stay. We'll try out choreography to get her critique and/or sit around and just talk...usually into the wee hours of the morning. Now my instructor is such a caring person to sit with us when she lives in Oceanside. For my non-California peeps, Oceanside is at least an hour's drive away from Riverside. So last Monday was no exception...
A friend of mine wants to do a duet with me for our next show. Little did I know that it involved some double veil.
Allow me to explain briefly. Veil is hard. Learning to wield a 3 yard piece of silk fabric with grace while not getting tangled up in it is no small feat. Wielding TWO veils at the same time is akin to avoiding constant attack by a fabric monster. So my instructor shows me some pointers, how to hold them, and a few moves to do with them. The next thing I know, I'm spinning with both veils (that's 6 yards of veil, ya'll), pop out my arms holding a veil in each hand, and BOOM I'm doing consecutive barrel turns with two veils. The effect is gorgeous...it's like the dancer is encircled in two silk spirals. Take a look here to see what I'm talking about. Double veil happens around 3:25.
Is that a cell phone?! And now La Wepa feels like she accomplished something that she thought would take 5 years of intense study to do.
