I was walking through the mall tonight, something Ive done several times since I arrived in Bahrain, but tonight it was different. I looked around at the stores and shops and people and thought about what I was going to write in my journal. I guess you can't really know what it is like here in Bahrain unless you try it for yourself. Bahrain is unlike any other arab country, even other arabs say so. Bahrain is such a free country and so diverse that it reminds me of what New York has been described to me as. The children in the mall made me think even more to write something in my journal. As I was going up the escalator to the second floor of the mall, a little kid with a cup of chocolate Baskin Robins ice cream in his hand, was walking down the escalator while his house maid was yelling at him to get off. As I was walking past the kid and the upset nanny, I saw another mom in her full arab dress (abaya and hijab)...(abaya= black overcoat, hijab=scarf) with her kids at the candy cart (sweet shop) telling them to hurry up and pick what they wanted. As I kept walking I saw yet another family and one of the kids had a pair of swimming goggles on his head...I just looked at him and smiled. I walked in to the food court and looked around...wondering what I should eat for dinner...KFC, Burger King, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut...McDonalds..I decided on kids meal at BK..and I got double toys for having a kids club card. There really is so much here that reminds me of home. They even have starbucks. The Geant is just like super-walmart. And they have so much stuff to do here. Movies, malls, camels, horses, dolphins, whales, ice skating, pearl snorkling, swiming, fishing, boating, jet skiing...etc..
You get use to the men in thobes (white overcoat/robe) and their head gear and the women in the abayas. Bahraini's are just like us for the most part...they play games with their kids..and take them out for movies and trips to the mall. Yeah they have a few different rules on driving..but it's not so bad once you get use to the round a bouts. I only hope that everyone can have an experience like I have here in Bahrain.
