Background:
http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Rick_Grimes_%28TV_Series%29
Personality:
Rick is a very compact character. I can quote his actor, Andrew Lincoln, saying that he is an ordinary man put in to an extraordinary position. He’s the kind of man that has to have a set goal or set plans to keep him moving or he’ll fail and in a situation like he’s in, not having that goal will be his end. Even when he wakes up in the hospital after being in a coma his first goal is to find survivors then his family. Rick has no idea what’s happened to the world when he wakes up to a destroyed hospital and the half eaten body of a nurse down the hall from his room.

As black and white as Rick sees things, his edges are frayed. There are a few scenes in season one that show that his marriage/family life aren’t as picture perfect as we the viewer would think it would be. Before he got shot there’s a scene where Rick and his best friend Shane are sitting in their squad car talking about their views on women. Rick mentions that his wife, Lori, had said infront of their son Carl that ‘sometimes I wonder if you even care about us at all.’ It’s a scene where you can see it’s hurt him- he’s the sort of guy that is going to try to right any wrong that he can, but this is one case he has no idea what’s wrong to fix. He goes on to say that ‘the difference between men and women is that I would never say anything that mean to her.’

Rick is also a Sheriff’s Deputy which fits with his need to be doing something even before the dead started to walk. He’s very morally sound though as time moves on during the show you can see the cracks that might not have been seen before in his personality and ideals start to grow wider. A good example of this is when Merle Dixon, a biker with a rather unbecoming attitude towards women and minorities, is beating up T-Dog and threatening Glenn, Rick handcuffs him to the roof they are on until he calms down. However Rick also gives the key to T-Dog letting him be the deciding factor when Merle is set free. As things progress worse they end up having to leave Merle on the rooftop as the ‘geeks’ bust in to the building. Thankfully T-Dog padlocks the door leaving Merle safe on the rooftop. When the group does manage to get back to camp, Rick the next day wants to go back after Merle knowing they can’t just leave the man on the rooftop. Also having dropped his duffle bag with lots of guns/ammo and a walkie connected to a man who saved him after he got out of the hospital helped a little in the decision. To make a long story short, and not to ruin the series if anyone hasn’t seen it, they do go back and Rick has to make a decision that cuts half of what is in his bag down to help other people.

As the show, and even the comic, progresses, we see that Rick is not a very religious person. There’s at least twice in the show and a dozen times in the comic where he questions God and why he’s letting this happen. At least once in the show there is a time where he’s asking God to give him a sign that he’s doing the right thing because everything seems to be going down the drain fast. The CDC was a bust, his trip with a few others to get Merle left the camp to get attacked, and one of the party members goes missing after a herd of Walkers walks over them. It’s that moment when you start to see the cracks grow wider and the edges become more frayed. He wants to find a place for them all to be safe, but at what cost? He’d already told Merle back in Atlanta that he’d take out anyone or anything standing in his way of finding his wife and son.

But as all this is going on and the world is going to hell in a hand basket, Rick has this undying hope. Sure he might question it from time to time but he’s always searching for that thing that will keep them all going. Giving up is not an option for him and he’ll be damned if he lets the others give up too. This comes out more in the recent episodes of season two which is also me telling you all to watch it if you haven’t.

Abilities: Nothing that’s not normal for a man his age and stuff.

Sample Entry:

[It had been a few days since Rick had woken in a strange house in a world not infested with the undead. Sure the drones were just as bad in a way, but at least they talked to you and weren’t exactly craving you for dinner. The way the woman looked at him was unsettling because it reminded him in a way of the way his wife used to look at him. Having the two kids wasn’t exactly a picnic either considering his own son was somewhere in a world that was unsafe for him. While he had searched the town over he hadn’t been able to find any of the Atlanta survivors, his family, or his best friend.

The phone clicked on after a few seconds of tone as the man settled on the sidesteps in to the kitchen of his house. Every night at the same time he’d come on the phone line doing the same talk asking if any of the Atlanta survivors were there and were to find him. Tonight, though, was different.]

You know, I’ve been coming over these lines the last few days looking for my family or anyone from my home and so far I’ve run in to a dead end. I don’t like not having a direction, a goal, or the responsibility keeping them safe. [Rick paused slightly as the sounds of kids laughing came closer and the sound of a door nearby filled the receiver.] What unsettles me more is the routine I’ve gotten in to that doesn’t exactly resolve around my family. Sleeping in had all but become a thing of the past when you had Walkers t’ look out for. Not to mention actually having a hot meal not from a can or the chance t’ shower.

No. No I’m not gonna do the same roll call tonight. Not tomorrow either- I’ll keep hopin’ they all show up here, but I’m not gonna keep bothering you folks with it. You know there names and where to find me if they do show up.
[Again silence passed over the line before Rick heaved himself up to his feet, speaking softly in to the phone one last time before hanging up for the night.] Lori... Carl... I love you both. I’ll find a way back to you- I promise.
