The Night Before

Lula had not had herself a decent lay since Mia, her collage sweetheart, had left her. Okay, yes, she'd had a few dates and yes, she took care of things herself often, but she still had that loneliness where a happy and satisfying relationship used to be. She had that empty spot in her heart, but she didn’t let it rule her- she still had faith that the multiverse was gonna provide for her- love would come her way, she just had to keep an eye open for it. In the mean time, she was spending her time enjoying her time- enjoying her job and little Nannette- enjoying the friendships she had found in her adopted state- enjoying the possibilities and freedoms all around her.

That faith in what was to come was a treasure Lula knew many people didn't have, one that many people couldn't hardly imagine, and she knew that that lack of that faith sometimes made them do strange things. They did things that were hurtful to themselves and never seemed to cotton on that doing those things wouldn't help their situations any- wouldn’t solve their problems- wouldn't make the pain go away. Like so many others Lula had met, the woman she was escorting away from the scene at the reception, struck Lula as a might unhappy and terribly lonely. And so, she had drunk too much and made a desperate play for Lula- which Lula couldn't accept in good conscious because drunk was the same as no.

She guided the overly handsie Marlene James-Fitzpatrick out of the elevator and into the hotel room, gently helped settle her in the bed and took her leave of the woman. Then she stopped at the desk in the lobby and arranged for an eleven o'clock delivery of some food to the suite. It was gonna be hard enough for the woman to get home in the morning, without her having to think as well. Then Lula went back to the end of the party to dance and watch Clive and Aidan flirt and kiss Rush, Denny and Nannette goodbye, because they would be leaving for the airport and then Aruba in the morning. Lula had offered to keep Nannette or go along, but they had refused saying that she should take some time for herself, so she did.

In the morning, as Lula was getting dressed, she thought again of Marlene and the hangover she was likely facing, and before she had really thought about it, she was in her car going out to find something comfy to bring over to the hotel for Marlene to wear instead of the dress from the night before. She dropped them at the hotel on her way to the shore. She had a week's vacation to enjoy and ocean spray seemed a good ingredient to include. The beach, the ocean and a notebook to write her poetry in, her swimsuit, her sun block and a shiny pair of shades to hide behind, the wind in her hair, the sun on her face and her toes in the sand- it was gonna be great.
