The Jackie Tyler Drabbles 1: Ring 1/1

Sep 24, 2007 00:20

I challenged shabella to give me a word as prompt for a drabble. She gave me Ring. I don't think this is what she was expecting as a result, but she was kind enough to say she likes it :)

BRed by un_sedentary - thank you! :)

Ring

It sits, silent, on the sideboard. Just as it did yesterday, and just as it will tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after.

If she picks it up and dials a number she knows by heart, she knows exactly what she’ll hear. The same thing she’s heard three thousand times before.

At least she hasn’t forgotten Rose’s voice.

The advantage - curse? - of voicemail: the dead live on in their recorded greetings.

It’s been three hundred and sixty days. More than long enough to accept reality. Rose isn’t coming back.

And still she waits for the phone to ring.

end

And I challenged shabella to write a drabble of her own on the same theme. She did, and her version - gorgeous, inspired - is here.
