Continuing the Great Classic Who (Re)Watch, I'm just about to watch Three's last episode, Planet of the Spiders. I miss Jo Grant! And it's fascinating to see again the much younger Sarah Jane.
However, most of all at this point I miss the first (to us) Master, played by Roger Delgado. I've now seen and remember clearly four Masters: Simm, Jacobi (for all of the two minutes he was actually the Master as opposed to Yana), Roberts and Delgado. I don't remember Anthony Ainley in the role and won't see him for a while yet.
Right now, hands down my favourite Master is Roger Delgado. He is suave, charming, deliciously evil yet courtly with it. He plays opposite Jon Pertwee with perfect dramatic - and comedy - timing. Unlike Simm - though we now know why this was the case - he doesn't chew the scenery, yet it's obvious that he's a bit insane as well as evil. And yet there are times when he can be persuaded to do the right thing, even occasionally for the right reasons.
My Master :)
Who's your favourite Master, and why?
ETA: RIP Three :(
