Achilles Heel

It was supposed to be a quick trip to Faro for some shopping. It wasn’t supposed to get her nearly killed.

One minute she was standing with the Doctor as he haggled over a piece of what looked like scrap metal; the next, she had a knife held to her throat.

He wanted the TARDIS. He was Nym, one of the last few survivors of a planet that was destroyed in the war that killed the Doctor’s own people. They’re now mercenaries, the Nym, and they wanted the TARDIS to go back in time to sell their services in wars they already know they can win.

The Doctor couldn’t let them have the TARDIS. But he couldn’t let them kill her, either. She could see in his eyes the agony of indecision, his frantic fear for her - and the moment when he was ready to hand over the TARDIS key.

She freed herself. All men are vulnerable in the same place, after all, and the Nym didn’t stand a chance.

The Doctor’s barely been able to look at her since. And she knows why.

He really can’t protect her all the time. She always knew that. Now he does too.
