Fannish Five: Spin-offs

Aug 07, 2009 22:47

1: Jackie Tyler. Scarier Than A Dalek, all about her meteoric rise from velour track-suits on the Powell Estate to designer jewellery as the wife of Pete Tyler, Vitec millionaire. She’s got a comeback for every occasion, and her slapping hand’s always toned and ready for use. Best of all, she’s the only woman in the universe the Doctor’s terrified of.

2: Harriet Jones. Because she’s brilliant, and she’s the Prime Minister. Forget Ten’s six words of doom in The Christmas Invasion, Harriet’s going to get her Golden Age. Yes, We Know Who You Are. Three terms of office, and re-elected on a landslide every time. Under her leadership, the Doctor may just want to think carefully about returning to Earth; but, on the other hand, we know that Torchwood will be kept under firm control!

3: Mickey Smith. Not Just A Tin Dog, the story of a grease-monkey turned vigilante hero, destroyer of Daleks and defender of the Earth. With just a yellow van, an underground radio network and some really big guns, he and his partner Jake Simmons save the world from aliens week after week, accompanied by lively snark and obligatory video-games references. This one's for fanboys and the ladies alike, especially as there's a contractual requirement for Noel Clarke to lose his shirt at least once an episode. A sure-fire ratings winner, this one!

4: Donna Noble. The New Adventures of SuperTemp, a super-hero with a difference, saving the world one piece of red tape at a time. She’s clever, she’s quick, and she’s got a tongue that can rip the toughest of chief executives to shreds. And, every so often, just as David Banner turns into the Incredible Hulk, she becomes the DoctorDonna (You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry, Dumbo). Unmissable TV - if you miss it, she’ll slap you.

5: The Duplicate Doctor. One Heart, But Still A Genius, the story of an ordinary half-Time Lord learning to live as a human, but making a rather rubbish job of it. Let’s face it, when you’ve lived almost all your life in a home that’s bigger on the inside, how are you going to get used to houses - with doors and carpets - that are smaller on the inside? When you’re used to being able to escape any situation with psychic paper and a TARDIS, how do you cope with being stuck in one place and having to put up with bureaucracy and things like birth certificates and national insurance numbers and driving licences and other pieces of paper to prove who you are? With or without Rose and the rest of the Tyler family, he’s sure to provide entertaining viewing in this hilarious comedy.
