Jack/Nine fic rec
For people on my flist who enjoy Jack and Nine, but don't follow wintercompanion, here's a first fic from a very talented author new to DW:
Reaction, by yamx
Set shortly after the end of The Doctor Dances, reaction is setting in quite severely for Jack: after all, he did almost wipe out the human race and, he thinks, almost caused the collapse of the universe. With a bit of tough love and quite a lot of gentleness from the Doctor, he starts to forgive himself.
One of my favourite bits:
The Doctor’s gaze turns sorrowful. “You want to be punished? Right, here’s your punishment: you’ll remember. Every day, for the rest of your life, you’ll remember what you almost did. And every time you’re about to do something, you’ll wonder if you’re headed towards another catastrophic blunder. And you’ll never, never be sure that it won’t happen again, that you won’t screw up even worse. You’ll have to live with that every day. Nothing to do with me, though: that’s just the kind of bloke you are.”
Recommended not just because there's a real shortage of good Jack/Nine in this fandom, but even more so because yamx writes very, very well indeed, knows these characters well and writes dialogue that feels like them. If you like it, tell the author so!
And ETA: if there are any OT3 fans on my flist who haven't yet discovered canaana, get over to her master-list and start catching up! I recced her here previously, but that was before she started posting on LiveJournal. In particular, check out her Canon-Compliant and Major Arcana series, both with Nine/Rose/Jack, the second of which is set post-POTW, though her one-off fics are also excellent. She's also written one of the best original characters I've read in DW fanfic (Amelia).
