Summary:My take on what happened when Castiel was taken back to heaven.
Easy Choice
It's accidental that he finds out heavens true plan for Dean. And even though he is ready to defy them all to help Dean and help humankind,he never gets the chance.
They come for him and they drag him back. To his punishment.
And then Zachariah comes to him. Reminds him of his duty, his loyalty to god. Reminds him that he is Castiel and not Cas.
Tells him that what they're planning is paradise on earth.
For everyone who survives.
That this is what's long been foretold. Promises him that if he keeps following his orders and if Dean learns to obey the angels' wishes;that Dean will be happy.
That he won't stay up all night because he's to scared of remembering the torture he inflicted on all those souls. That in the end he will understand, and be grateful that Castiel did this. That he will forgive him. Forgive his brother. Will stop feeling like he failed everyone. Will be happy.
He also warns him that, should Dean not be of use to them, there is nothing that stops them from sending him back to the pit.
When he agrees with Zachariah and promises to keep in line,he knows it's the only way for Dean to ever find happiness again. He knows, even while he mourns the dead that will follow, that it's the only way for him.
When they send him back,he knows he's getting watched and the threat to Dean is clear.
All he can do is to get out there as fast as possible and so he repeats to Dean what he has been reminded of; tells Dean he doesn't serve him and walks away.
He doesn't know whether it's him or Jimmy the pain he feels is coming from and in the end it doesn't matter. They're both leaving behind the only people they ever loved like this.
