In response to a post from xoverau.
I have only come across one fic that mentioned Delaware. The writer was from Australia and seemed to think that justified her inaccuracies. For christ's sake, it's the fucking internet, can't you attempt a minimal amount of research just to make it a little more realistic?
- for the record, Warped Tour doesn't come to Delaware. neither does Taste of Chaos, or Ozz Fest or any other major tour. We travel to Philadelphia, PA, Camden, NJ or Baltimore, MD for the major acts. Some groups like The Used, 30 Seconds to Mars, 3 Doors Down or The Goo Goo Dolls do come to Delaware and usually play at Kahunaville, The Bob Carpenter Center (which is at the University of Delaware)or sometimes the State Fair.
- you can travel from one end of the state to the other in less than 2 hours.
-the state is bi-sected by the Chesapeake and Delaware canal.
-the northern half of the state is predominately industry. Textiles, automobiles and credit card banks. duPont Corporation is headquartered here. Delaware is the leading producer of chemicals in the U.S. Our cancer rate is sky high. The duPont Children's Hospital is located here. Chrysler and GM both have plants here. Because of it's corporate laws, more corporations are headquartered in Delaware than any other state. I work in the credit card industry.
-the southern half of the state is mostly agricultural: farming and chickens. we raise a hell of a lot of chickens. Two of the largest chicken processing operations in Delaware are Perdue (no surprise there, huh?) and Mountaire. we grow peaches, strawberries, potatoes, corn, and soy beans amongst other things. the southern half of the state also borders the Atlantic Ocean, so our beaches are a tourist destination for the better part of the year. in the summer the license plates from pennsylvania, new york, and new jersey outnumber our own 3 to 1.
-our roads are heavily traveled and hence are shit and always under repair.
-we are a NASCAR state. Delaware is home to Dover Downs (The Monster Mile)and twice a year we are descended upon by the flocking hordes of the ever faithful. If you live in the southern half of the state, you know to go to the grocery store the thursday prior to race weekend and then pretty much stay off the roads the rest of the weekend. if you work in the northern half of the state, you are wise to leave at least 30 mins earlier than normal the monday following a race weekend to accomodate the steady flow of RV's leaving the state.
-we are a blue state. pretty much always have been. at least for as long as I have been voting and for as long as I can remember.
-the schools will close for 6" of snow or less and especially for ice. the roads in rural areas are narrow and a hazard to busses. we don't get as much snow as we used to a decade ago. we do get hurricanes and the occasional tornado, but the latter is pretty rare and don't touch down often or travel far once they are down like they do in the midwest.
-Delaware is home to 8 colleges and universities (5 in the northern half/3 in the southern half).
-The Underground Railroad passed through Delaware. Slaves were given refuge and shelter in sites, including homes near or in my town.
- The Lenape Indians were the original natives of Delaware.
-Dela-where?
