I have a friend who is moving. I have known her for almost 10 yrs and have never once set foot in her apt. I always knew she was kind of a pack rat from the way she keeps her car. She would have to move stuff just so someone could get in. stuff like magazines, newspapers, bags full of stuff, sodas, snacks, etc... I figured she had the same issues with her apt and that's why no one was ever invited over. I never pressed the issue, although at times I was pretty curious. so I was a little surprised when she asked me if I would help her move. she rented a uhaul and arranged for people (mostly family) and me to come over last saturday. she also asked me to pick up her niece, who was staying in the town I live in. no problem. I had met her niece before and it was cool. we got over there around noon and met my friend, who was just running to the store to get ice, water, sodas, and beer for everyone. she told us the door was open, go on up. well, we went up and I was floored. flabbergasted. flummoxed. nothing was packed. at all. and there was not a single empty, open space to be seen. everywhere was stuff! stuff upon stuff! knick knacks, canned goods, boxes, candles, lotions, body sprays, cereal bars, candy, magazines, newspaper. anything you could imagine a person might horde was in that apt. you could not see the furniture for the stuff on top of it. not a single inch of counter space could be seen in the kitchen because of cans and bottles. and the cupboards were still full. not a single inch of open space on the bathroom sink because of bottles of lotions and liquid soaps. there were 5 different bars of soap in various stages of use on the sink. all piled up in the corner under the toothbrush holder. the shower had bottles on every conceivable surface, even on the shower floor. the cupboard under the bathroom sink was stacked all the way to to the top w/ pads, tampons, toilet paper, razors. if you took out one single item, it would all come tumbling down. there was a basket on her bed with about 10 different deodorants in it. the bed itself was piled high with clothes, magazines, throw pillows. there were dozens of bottles of bath and body works sprays and lotions on the bedroom dresser. jewelry was strewn about everywhere. in baskets, glasses, in old candle jars. and the candles numbered in the the hundreds, just from what i could see. some were burned down so far, they could never be lit again.
My friend seemed slightly embarrassed by the state of things, but not enough to be contrite that she had actually not packed a thing. I have seen things like this on daytime tv, but had never experienced it first hand. it's not something I'm anxious to repeat. needless to say it was a long, hot day. she asked me to come back on sunday. i told her we were having dinner at my mom's. when i got home saturday night (after a long, long shower) my mom called and asked us to come to dinner on sunday. i talked to my friend tonite for the first time since saturday. she's not done moving yet. she still needs help...............
