He Spent Most of the Evenings on The Roof

It feels like providence - looking at this photo, culled from the National Geographic's Top 10 Space Photos screams out to me, "Here is the ultimate cover for a krautrock / space disco 12" vinyl a la CAN, Lindstrom, Neu!, Black Moth Super Rainbow et al if ever there was one." For the benefit of science-enthusiasts, this is a streamer of hydrogen gas from a supernova. What a pretty shade of pink!

I finished writing a song this afternoon, which I'd like to record to CD if I get chance before I return to Manchester. One of the gifts I received for Christmas was Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell on DVD by experimental film maker Matt Wolf. It's all sorts of adjectives like 'inspiring', 'beguiling', 'touching'.

Russell is another of the inspirations I've written about on here before and watching this film, which manages to cram in a lot of detail in its tidy 71 minute run time, simply reinforces my admiration/besottedness for the man and his music, as well as reinvigorating my efforts in my own.

So that's basically Christmas out of the way now. In a few days time it will be 2009 and the treadmill will slow down, or at least appear to - but not for long I'm sure.
