The Testimonies of George Galaxy (Continued)
George, what are your thoughts on sport? Leisure pursuit of the brutally malajusted, or graceful repose of the Gods?
Gods? I'm not even an aethiest, let alone a polyethiest. But then, sport comes in so many variegated forms that its not inconcievable that each one has an individual God as its emblem. I would guess that Hermes would have liked the 100 meter dash, that Ares would've enjoyed rugby and that Zeus might have had a certain fondness for table-football, because sport is many different things to different people. My parents made a sport out of pancake day and would keep a tally of how many pancakes they could toss without them flopping on the floor or sticking to the ceiling, but one unfortunate year and pancake landed on me and I got lemon-juice in my eye, so the games stopped after that. When a person is robbed of their sport, they become as empty as a cricket-ground in December.
I understand what you're saying. Is there any particular sport that you would consider yourself a votary of?
No, I'm too indolent to be a sportsman myself, but there are sports I follow, like Formula One, which appeals to me because of its trans-continental nature, its cosmopolitan air - its like a festival of tar and rubber where the French can drink champagne next to the German, and the Brazillian can talk to his British neighbour about the weather. I miss not having a TV, here at the Academy, but I have the sports weeklies sent to my room so I can at least keep up with whats happening. I keep press cuttings of the most spectacular but non-fatal crashes, which is just a case of decent respect for the sportsman.
