I've been trying to write a little piece about Shary Boyle for a week now, and all my attempts seem to have ended in a rather tedious list of achievements, none of which have really described why I like her work so much - so I will let her images do the talking and try and muddle some kind of footnote to underpin them.
I find the very concept of using OHP images at music performances potentially as beguiling as watching a Ronnie Burkett marionette theatre show (see earlier journal entries). If the image is complimentary, then you have what I hold to be a more dynamic artistic statement. Sound and visuals! Me and my friend Brian wanted to do something like this when we were hauling all our stuff to Wigan every week and jamming, but we never did take our sonic glue to the stage.
Shary Boyle is a technically assured artist, and her style is quite naturalistic. Even her subject matter is steadily rooted in humanistic concerns such as sexuality and identity. It's the way that Shary is able to express these concerns that, for me at least, pushes her into the realm of a gifted artist.
You can find a detailed account of Shary Boyle's artistic career, previous work and thoughts on the art industry quite easily on the net. If you're at all interested, I recommend you seek it out (I would do it now, but am a tad busy).
