1. Choose fifteen of your all time favorite books.
2. Take the first sentence of the first chapter and make a list in your journal.
3. Don't reveal the author or the title of the book.
4. Now everyone try and guess.

I thought 15 was maybe a bit too many and I've chosen fairly classical ones to give you a sporting chance. (6 is maybe not quite so classical)

1. When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton.

2. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

3. Midway in our life's journey, I went astray
from the straight road and woke to find myself
alone in a dark wood

4. Mr. Sherlock Holmes, who was usually very late in the mornings, save upon those not infrequent occasions when he was up all night, was seated at the breakfast table.

5. Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote.

6. Gwenda Reed stood, shivering a little, on the quayside.

7. Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again

8. On the first Monday of the month of April, 1625, the market town of Meung, in which the author of Romance of the Rose was born, appeared to be in as perfect a state of revolution as if the Huguenots had just made a second La Rochelle of it.

9. I address these lines--written in India--to my relatives in England. My object is to explain the motive which has induced me to refuse the right hand of friendship to my cousin, John Herncastle.

10. There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, and a rain so penetrating, that further out-door exercise was now out of the question.
