I have no idea how to crochet, but I had a bit of a freeform bash at it last night and this is what happened. Do the stitches look right at all?

So, I was at my local B&N and looking through the craft section, and saw a *bunch* of books about making softies, etc...and I kinda want to start.  However, I wasn't really sure where to begin.  Can anyone recommend a good book for beginners?  Or tips?

I just came across this marvelous series of basic, how to crochet amigurumi, tutorials!  There are short videos for each step of the way, and you can start at the very beginning (how to hold the hook!) or at the point where you need some help.

I'm a bit of a lurker, and this is my first post. Ok, I tried to learn to crochet from some library books and really REALLY couldn't get it to go right. What was meant to be the central part of a granny square (A kinda flower shape) ended up as a bit mass of wool!
