Some of you may remember my post a while back about making a present for my roommate based on this picture. If you don't, here's the quick backstory: My roommate's birthday was July 6, and we both love South Park and watch it religiously online every few days, etc. There's an episode in which Cartman and Butters have to hold hands for a school ( Read more... )

i think your friend will love it.

also, re selling on etsy, you probably need to be wary about selling copyright character items.

Considering the MASSIVE amount of Twilight merch on Etsy, along with Disney, Harry Potter, and comic book characters there's really no need to obey copyright because she'd be one of the only ones.

Most companies don't really care if you are small time occasionally selling something based on their characters or logo just because you felt like making it. It's free publicity, and you aren't a big enough market to waste the money on to take you to court. In the case of south park, there have been several internet spinoffs of south park or southpark like characters and they seem to be encouraged by the network. You are probably safe!

But be careful of Disney. Disney is absolutely fascist about their copyright laws. They have been known to send threatening letter threatening legal action just because someone had put graphic of winnie the pooh on their web page. You don't want to tangle with Disney.

Oh I've heard horror stories about Disney. :( which is unfortunate, because they've got so much money; why can't they just let people be creative? But I guess there's always gotta be someone.

And I think you're right about Matt & Trey/South Park in general; they've got the episodes up on the site for free, and I think their reasoning behind that was, "It won't discourage them from buying merch," and it's true. In fact, it's made me want to buy MORE merch! I think the same will go for the dolls, at least I hope, in that it'll get someone watching, then get them hooked. At least, that's my theory. :D

Hah -- I didn't think of that. I've also seen Star Wars merch, so I guess I could always try...
