Japanese Patterns?

Hi all! I recently purchased a Japanese Amigurumi pattern book. I was wondering how exactly you read the picture patterns inside. I can muddle my way through translating but I'm curious about all the XXXs. Does anyone have a good resource for understanding how they are set up? I purchased the book "Sweets"
