Maggie,

Most kids are cute, but it takes quite a bit to wear them out. Kudos to you on that, I could never get West tired enough to fall asleep on me.

I'm glad to hear everything is well, England always has an opinion on everything and should be hit in the shin with a shovel for all his complaining. But then again, he's your family so I guess at Christmas I'll just have to deal with him.

West and I have moved up to the old house in Berlin. I missed it, the newer one in the Rhineland is nice but it's not a much of home as this old, creaky place is. It's not like its falling down, it's just old and big so there's always repair work to be done. I'm slowly fixing the carved wooden moulding along the tops of the door frames, many of them are cracked from the house settling. I'll tackle fixing some of the shingles on the roof next, West is too tired from the election to do more than sleep and wander around the house in his slippers. So it's up to me it seems.

Rest is for the weak, if I lie in bed any longer I might end up going crazy.

love always,

Gil.

Gilbert,

Rest, darn you. I need you to have all your strength by the time the holidays roll around, because I intend to spend most of my waking moments at Ireland's kissing you senseless. Which reminds me, unless something comes up or I'm invited elsewhere, I should be spending at least a week after Christmas with her. Would you be interested in staying, as well? She never minds visitors and besides, I'll ask anyway.

I'm glad to hear you're back in Berlin. A little bit of handywork (when you're not resting - which you should be!) will do you well. I do hope you were careful with those shingles. Tell your bruder he has to rest and feel better soon, too. Canada says so.

Yours,
Maggie

p.s. Ontario came up for a visit while the boys were here to show off her new camera. I managed to get a few of the prints to send to you. Enjoy. - M.

[Enclosed is three photographs: one of Canada laughing with two small boys on her lap, apparently eight or so in age, with their names written on the back; one of Canada and Ontario -- save for Ontario looking slightly younger and having straight hair, they look very much like family; and one of Canada alone. The last is taken from the ground, looking up at her sitting in a tree in pants and a sleeveless shirt. There's a chimpmunk perched on her shoulder and she's wearing a smile like she couldn't possibly be happier. The note on the back of that one simply reads, 'I love you.']

Maggie,

You'll be happy to know I have been forced to rest. Liz has taken the habit of slipping me sleeping pills 'for my own good' in various ways. I'm almost wary to eat or drink anything she gives me for fear of dropping asleep a half hour later. That's odd to say, half hour later. English can be incredibly confusing when trying to translate from German in my head.

Thank you for the photos, Ontario and you could pass for sisters you look related. Your provinces look happy, see I told you that you'd do well as a country. You can do it Maggie. And I'll cherish the last one, I don't think there's a better picture I've seen of you... other than a few I have in my head. But I don't think those should be photographed for anyone but me.

I'd love to spend the week following Christmas with you, but I wanted to ask now if you would like to come down here for Easter? France told me you don't really do anything and it's a big deal for my people. France already agreed he would play as a cover for you if you did wish to come.

West says not to worry about him, but he's been cooking recently, hence why this letter is attached to such a large package. If I eat any more marmalade I might turn into it.

Love,

Gil.

[The letter is just inside a large package wrapped in boring brown paper and tons of tape. Inside is a few bottles of jams and marmalades, marzipan, gingerbread cookies, almond cookies, and a a few apple turnovers with a note that says 'hope these don't get squished' on them.

Buried under all of this is a photo of the two of them in Francis' rose garden. Gilbert's pressing a kiss to her cheek and she's smiling at him with an arm around his waist.]

Gilbert,

Thank you. Thank you for the sweet letter and for passing on your brother's delicious kitchenwork and for that photograph I didn't even know existed. I'll cherish it always. We actually look like a couple, it's astounding. I love you.

English is the most pain-in-the-ass language I've ever learned and I would love to visit for Easter. I can't give a definite answer yet just in case something comes up here that I'll need to stay home, but consider this a tentative yes. I hope I can be there.

Lately, Francis has been encouraging me to work on artistic persuits, hence why you get a package, as well. Both of these paintings are the result of a few days work out in the woods surrounding my house. I'm no great artist, but I like to think I did the colours of the autumn leaves justice. I'm hoping you hang these somewhere you and your visitors will be able to appreciate them anyway, becuase I'm just slightly vain like that.

Be well, mo gradh.

Love,
Maggie

[Enclosed carefully are two paintings. One of a black bear sitting and staring at the artist (i.e. the crazy girl who is friends with all the bears) amongst the bright colours of the fall foliage. The other is the same bright hues, this time framing a small waterfall in, approximately, the middle of nowhere.]

Maggie,

I didn't know that photo existed. Apparently Liz took the photo one afternoon and she was waiting until the right moment before she was going to reveal it.

I'm glad you're contemplating Easter. I know it is a ways off but it is still good to ask right? I told West and he smiled, I think he's finally starting to warm up to you. Don't worry, it take him much longer usually to even be conversational with other nations.

I'm glad Francis has been bugging you, but I will never understand your love of bears. Nonetheless I've found homes for your paintings, the waterfall being in my office and the one with the bear is in the hallway beside the portrait of some dead princess that gave us the painting. I personally hate it, she looks like one of the squish faced yappy little dogs in a ton of frills [your painting is now replacing that, thank you so much] so it needs to be destroyed or given to a gallery.

I love you, keep yourself well,

Gil.

Mon Prusse,

I address this letter as such because I was visiting Québec yesterday and found a history textbook referencing you. Of course, in French (I have always assumed it's just to annoy you), Prussia is a feminine noun. It made me laugh. And Québec look at me funny, but I've started to expect this from the provinces whenever I'm thinking about you. I can't help that you make me laugh.

Both news of West smiling over my possible visit and that you've found homes for my paintings please me. I was hoping you'd find somwhere to place them. With any luck, the bear will scare that portrait princess off, since you all seem so scared of them in Europe.

Ich liebe dich,
Maggie

P.S. Ireland's sent out her Christmas invitations. Don't forget to tell her you're coming. Furthermore, I checked with her about staying after the holiday and it appears we might actually have the house to herself for a few days, if her plans hold out the way they seem. She says she's supportive of us having alone time, provided she has a conversation with you first.
