So some of you may heard. I'm a waiter now. So I figure as a new waiter I should explain a few things that we expect from you the customer and how we see things.
Let's start with the stereotypes waiters have about customers:
- Young Kids: this in no way means anyone over 18. This mostly refers to everyone with braces who comes in with 10 friends and they all order water and split one thing between the 10 of them. We doubt your going to tip even 15% and you just filled up one to two tables of our section plus most likely made a mess.
- Indians: not native americans, indians. You people never tip more than 10% unless you order lots of alcohol. Your rude, demeanding, and often talk shit behind our backs.
- The Angry Family/Person: your out to eat, fucking smile. We never know if were pissing you off or the foods bad. Maybe you should just stay at home if your so angry.
Some things you should expect from waiters as a customer:
- All customers should be treated the same. If you hear your waiter telling the other tables the specials and not yours, I'm sure a manager would love to hear that.
- Your drinks should never be empty. Ideally they should never be less than half empty but sometimes things get hectic and its not always easy to do. Even more so, if its free refills they shouldn't ask you if you want a refill.
- The waiter should be nice and personable. They should be their to help you, guide you through the menu, make you feel comfortable.
- They should never make you wait for the check. Its the worst part of the meal so it should be the quickest.
Things you need to keep in mind when tipping:
- First, no one realizes that we don't get the whole tip. Yea we make $2.65 an hour, swell, but the tip is split between us, the runners, bus boys, and the bar. Some restuarants have the waiter tip out on the total sales, others on total tips, but here is a scenerio for you. At Vinny T's I have to tip out a total of 30% of my tips to the bus boys, runners, and the bar. That means to walk home with $50 I need to make $75. Also, that 30% is the LOWEST were allowed to tip out to them, we often tip out more.
- 15% is where things should be if your not content. 18% is recommended. 20% will make them remember you. Do what you like, just don't over look us.
At any restaurant, you have the right to complain. A complaint is a an open invitation for a restaurant to fix the problem so you come back.
Enjoy my rant. Chew on it.
