Just got an email from my youngest brother who is getting married in November. He and his fiancee want me to write / find some love poetry to read at their wedding instead of being a bridesmaid (which I could care less about the "honor" of anyway, as I was a bridesmaid at his first wedding). They apparently love this piece that is by a Def Jam poet, but are worried about me being able to pull off something with "check this" and cursing and whatnot in it.
I did however remember I had a piece posted on my GeoCities page that I liked that would be a great fit, but isn't very long:
Here's something I wrote about 16 years ago that I still really like:
October 16, 1991
Love -
you know, LOVE -
that thing that sets your heart speeding,
palms sweating, stomach churning, nerves tingling...
Love - is that what it is? or is it
caring enough to spend forever
trying to make each other happy?
It could be wanting your children
to be from the two of you, or even
liking the way they look in the morning.
Maybe it's staying through the good times,
and the bad and calling it the
rollercoaster life throws you.
Love is worth forever, and sore toes
from bad dancing, and growing old together.
Love just happens to make the world go round.
At least, I think so.

Guess we'll see how I do! If anyone has any urban or non-fluffy poetry about love and marriage that they love, please send it my way! I'll probably have to read several pieces depending on the time block they are trying to fill out.
