Belated Turkey Day Debriefing

Nov 25, 2006 19:01

The day started out with being able to sleep in, and then I began the trek up to the VA to visit my Uncle who is up there once again with another serious medical issue. Yet another surgery, and this time he's going to be on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks and in the hospital for a week and a half due to a bone-deep staph infection at the site of his latest wrist surgery.

My parents and Bro & his fiance met me up there and we had a nice visit with my Uncle. His eldest son and his first-ever GF were there too, but we didn't really get to chat with them. We also picked up my Uncle's dog so my folks could watch here while he's still in hospital. His family can't or won't do it for him. Next we all packed into my parent's truck for the trek to my other Uncle's house in West Linn.

Traffic wasn't too bad, but the water on the road, and the rain made for some scary moments. When we arrived, I gave my Aunt 3 bottles of wine a cookbook and annual planner as a hostess gift. She had some appetizers ready, and since I had only eaten 3 hardboiled eggs all day (it was about 2:45 PM at this point, I dug in. My cousin J had made delicious deviled eggs. amd there were assortments of nuts, crackers and spinach dip and salmon dip. The turkey was in the oven, but most of the dishes were still to be heated up.

Later, my cousin J arrived with her 3 kids. Her hubby was working at the fire station that day. My other bro was also working at the police station in Corvallis that day too.

Finally we got down to eat. Turkey, a ham, a delicious prime rib (done on a bbq with garlic & herbs), mashed potatoes (with cream cheese, butter and lots of other goodies), stuffing, carrots with ginger, peas, a fruit salad, rolls, and my mother's family recipe slavic Sauerkraut.

It was all delicious. After dinner, I ended up watching the family traditional film National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with the kids. My cousin's kids aren't too bad overall, but they do have an obscene amount of energy and were running around all night.

My aunt sent me home with an opened bottle of white wine, the riesling I brought with me, and a 1.5 liter of merlot too. While we were there, my mom, aunt & I drank up the 1999 Bordeaux I brought, the 1997 Hogue Columbia Valley Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon I brought, and a 2001 Oregon Pinot Noir that they had gotten as a house-warming gift when they moved in a couple months ago.

I got a ride home and my parents headed off back south to Salem to stay with my bro & his fiance. A win-win situation for all and I was home by 10 PM, with some good food, and 1.5 bottles of lovely wine in my system.
