So, Tuesday night my parents and I went to see The Lion King at The Keller Auditorium. They picked me up from work and we drove around a bit deciding where to go eat dinner. I thought of Bistro Montage, as we had eaten there many times in the past with all sorts of groups of family members. However, when we arrived it was 5:10 PM, and they didn't open until 6 PM. With a curtain time of 7:30 PM, and knowing we might have a difficult time finding parking we changed our minds and headed over to Pastini Pastaria on Division. The site of the property used to be Ladd's Meat Company, and prior to that the land had housed my great grandfathers blacksmith shop.... so that was extra cool. Just down the street a few blocks from there my grandfather had been born in a house that now holds a Serenity Shop.
Anyway, the food was really good, and we had plenty of time to head back downtown to the auditorium. We found parking in my former building's garage across the street, and wended our way into the crowds. We had great seats in the Orchestra Section D, Row V, and I found out halfway through the show that my parents had spent $90.00 each on the three tickets! Whew!
The show began with dancers and singers in animal costumes coming from several areas through the crowd and snaking up to the stage. There were two huge percussion instrument areas on either side of the stage. The sets were simply amazing, and the costumes/puppets are hard to even describe. The essence of the animals were out there on stage, but also allowed for the personality of the actors. All of the music was incredible and very moving.
I would recommend that anyone who has a chance goes to see The Lion King if they can! My parents decided they wanted to buy a soundtrack after we left, and I have ordered a copy for both of us.
