I've been working on a holicminibang prompt which requires that I do a character study of (among others) Kunogi Himawari. I've come to a few conclusions.
1. Himawari, you are a saint.
You know how there's always that one character whom you feel continually gets the short end of the stick, both in canon and fandom? That's Himawari. I know that Doumeki is touted as the one carrying an unrequited torch for Watanuki and all that jazz, but I honestly feel like Himawari is both overlooked and under-appreciated. The fic I'm writing has put me squarely in her place, all the way from before she met the boys until the most recent chapters, and I'm thinking that I could not bear up under the weight of Himawari's life. I just couldn't. She's so strong to be able to smile all the time. It awes me.
2. Watanuki, you are a moron.
From the very beginning, you have been unable to grasp the fact that your choices affect other people. I understand that you are motivated by concern for other people, most of the time, but that just makes it even more astounding that you can be so clueless as to what you're doing to the people who care about you.
3. Doumeki, you are a doll.
I can't really qualify this one. He just is. But really, I wish I had someone in my life who was always there, no matter the distance, the cost, or the consequences. Especially after chapter 185, I think Doumeki must have become Himawari's lifeline, her connection to Watanuki, just as much as he became Watanuki's connection to the outside world. It's a hard role to fill, but he does it so well. Like I said, a total doll.
4. CLAMP, you are evil, evil people.
But brilliant. I'll give you that. Evil--but fucking genius.
On a related note, Yuki Kajiura once again rules my life. Why? Because "Michiyuki" is Himawari's theme song. No joke. Listen to it, read the lyrics. Undeniable. In fact, I'll post the translation here. Just because.
Also? Why does rereading my own fanfiction make me want to cry? I DON'T EVEN KNOW.
