Big Bend Cowboys at Bay Area Toros (Double Header)-August 16, 2009
The Cowboys started this game off with the lead and the Toros never caught up. We were within two runs at one point, but that was as close as we got.
So I got to the game and started slathering on the sunscreen. Then I spied a player walking from the outfield towards home plate. He was wearing a batting helmet, and on the brim, held on by tape, was a baseball glove. As he neared the stands, someone yelled out, "Hey Beau," and he looked up, grinned stupidly, gave a thumbs up and the person snapped a photo. I would have taken one, too, but my hands were all greasy and full of sunscreen. But it was pretty funny. This was the same guy who had tried to
catch a ball with his face yesterday, so I assume that's why he had a glove on his helmet. Just in case he wanted to catch any more balls that way. The glove was gone by the time he came up to bat, but I just thought that was cute.
Our bullpen sang their song again when the same relief pitcher trotted out to the mound. I wish I knew what they were singing! Speaking of the bullpen, a foul ball landed out that way and rolled past the bench and into left field foul territory. A guy in a chair got up to get it, but then quickly turned around and sat down in his chair, just as one of the other guys was about to sit down in it. I looked more closely and discovered that it was an upholstered swivel chair and was probably pretty comfortable. Lol. Someone was going to steal his chair! I love the bullpen.
I was wearing a Texas A&M shirt, and during the game, a Cowboys fan came over to talk to me for a bit. He was class of '91. It's always cool to meet other Ags.
scorecard 01scorecard 02 The Cowboys were the home team for the second game because it was a make up of one that had been postponed in Alpine. We ended up winning the second game of the day, so that made us 4-5 on the weekend. Not bad at all.
There was an interesting little incident in the fourth inning. We were up to bat, and some of the Cowboys players in the dugout were giving some lip to the umpire I guess, because the ump warned them. Someone said something else and blue looked over, pointed, and said, "You. You right there. You're gone." Well the dugout wasn't happy about this and they were saying things like, "He didn't even say anything!" A guy with a towel wrapped around his left arm started walking out toward the ump. He wasn't stalking or stomping, he wasn't shouting, just quietly walking (while the ump was looking away). I was getting a bit apprehensive about this, because the quiet ones are the ones to look out for, and another guy came out and turned him around. The other blue saw this and was all, "Get back in the dugout!" And then the coach was at home plate from third base and yelling at the ump. I heard everything the coach said, and not much of what the ump said, so here's a dramatic reenactment:
"You can't just throw one of our players out!"
"Someone was showing me up in there and I don't know who, but I need to throw someone out, so it's the guy with the towel on his arm."
"OK, but you can't just pick our starting pitcher!"
"That's your starting pitcher?"
"YES, THAT'S OUR STARTING PITCHER"
"OK, then..."
A guy in the dugout then raised his hand and volunteered to be thrown out. The ump pointed at him and said, "OK, you." And the coach was all "He can go." The way he said it, it was funny, and I laughed. The guy left the field and came up in the stands and I noticed he was the starting pitcher from the first game. So that's why the coach so wantonly threw him under the bus. Way to take one for the team, man! I heard him remark to a couple of Cowboys fans: "I only play one game a week anyway." Lol.
The other memorable thing happened when a line drive foul ball shot out to the bullpen bench. Someone out there yelled, "OH, SHIIIIT!" quite loudly as everyone on the bench leaned and scooted to get out of the way. It was just so funny. There were some kids hanging out in the ramp next to me and we all just had a good laugh over that. Then I yelled out, "We heard that!" And one of the kids yelled, "YEAH!" Hah. Did I mention I love the bullpen?
