Business as Usual or 'Wela Strikes Again!

Well, kiddos, I think I screwed up royally last night.

I went to Populace meeting last night which I probably had absolutely no business doing (yesterday was a major pain day!)  I was accompanied by the Wonder Hubby and the Wonder Son, Coelred!, so all was well.  Or so I thought. I made it through the Business Meeting portion of the evening just fine.  About halfway through the Baronial Court part, my pain medicine just died. One moment, fine; the next, internal screaming. So, as a result, I wasn't thinking straight. I'm not excusing what I did, here, I'm just explaining the circumstances, okay.

Now let me first state here publicly for everyone in the Knowne World to read, I adore our new Baronage!!! These are two really good people who have everyone's interests at heart, and I love, love, love the way they have re-energized Vatavia!! I love that Calontir approves of them and I love that so many people in the Kingdom think that they are the best thing since sliced bread because I do, too. So, you can probably sit there and think "Wela loves them, so she wouldn't do anything to insult them--never on purpose anyway." And I'm thinking you'd be wrong, because they called me up in Baronial Court last night, and they wanted to give me an Act of Dedication, which is a service award here in Vatavia, for sitting a two-hour shift at Troll. And I turned it down..........and I think I hurt their feelings. Stupid me!! And I was hurting really bad, so the Wonder Hubby and Wonder Son, Coelred, took me home right after court when I should have stuck around and explained to them why I routinely turn down Baronial service awards.

In retrospect, I should have taken the award in Court and returned it to them after Court with an explanation of why I routinely turn down Baronial service awards; but no, that would have required foresight and I didn't bring any with me last night. *sigh* So now, I have to seek them out and explain to them that they certainly didn't do anything wrong, and that I'm terribly sorry that I pulled a stupid stunt and embarassed them/discomfited them in any way, etc.

But, for the record, this is why I don't take Baronial service award: I have the honor of being a Companion of the Order of the Pelican. In the SCA, this is the very highest service award in the Society, not just the Kingdom. So, to my mind, I've already been rewarded for any service I did, do, or will do in the future. Anything I do in terms of Service, whether it be on the Kingdom level OR the Baronial level, is just my way of maintaining my membership in the Order, so to speak. And quite honestly, a Pelican taking on one 2-hour shift at Troll does not justify any special recognition whatsoever, it's just another day on the job to me. I don't believe a Peer should be rewarded for doing duties they perceive as part and parcel of their Peerage

Besides, Konrad worked most of the time at the Valor Troll, he should get an act of dedication. Lachlan the Wonder Hubby worked all day Saturday in the Tavern, he should get an act of dedication. So did Ted and Raven's daughter, Rachael, so did Finbharr, and Tancred--Tancred!--set the Tavern up and came up with the recipes and stayed in the Tavern all of Valor and didn't see much of anything else but the Tavern and he.........well, he should be bronzed, but we need his kind too badly!! How could I take an Act of Dedication when none of them got one? (Okay, wait, Konrad did, but still.....).

But I feel badly about the circumstances, all the same.  And I will talk to TE's soonest.  It would never do for any misunderstandings or hurt feelings coming between us.  I am, after all, their head cheerleader--and it's a job I am really enjoying!  I intend to get my pom-poms back out and get back on the job as soon as possible.

I just need to dislodge both feet from my mouth first.

duties, stupidity, peerage, vatavia
