One step closer

Ok, so it's a cruel joke that same-sex couples still can't get married in Washington (or most places), but until that happens, I'm awfully glad we have this.

I love the Ed Murray quote at the end.

62? That made me do a double take. It seems like too much of a restriction still.

The people who are speaking out against this blow my mind. They are most likely acting bassed on Christian beliefs and I just don't understand how they think that same sex couples deserve nothing. No recognition, no rights, no validation. I am not a Christian and the idea that people dictate how others should live their lives based on what THEY think God wants or doesn't want just seems so primative and ignorant. And it doesn't seem like these practices are going to change in my lifetime. *sigh* It's depressing.

See my comment below about the reasoning behind 62.

And yeah, the people who oppose stuff like this are shitheads, no two ways about it.

Yay! Sounds a lot like the "Civil Partnership" thing we have in the UK. What's that bit about "Be either members of the same sex, or if in a heterosexual partnership, have one person be at least 62 years old."? I don't get that.

It also made me look up the UK restrictions, and in the UK you can't get "civilly partnered" at all if you're a heterosexual couple, which strikes me as odd.

Apparently, once you hit that age there are actually financial DISincentives to get married, so a lot of older people who make commitments to each other choose not to marry so they don't mess up their retirement benefits. Obviously, people over that age would be increasingly likely to need to make health care/end-of-life decisions for their partners, so that's why they included them.
