Indictment; Pinnacle

From the moment he walked out of the car, he was pretty sure that this is gonna be a tough one. He handled lots of cases before, treason, kidnapping cases and some murder cases. But this is the hardest one.

The corpse was found on the bedroom of the victim, meters away from the window of the bedroom. Judging from the pupil on the eyes of the victim, the estimated time of death was estimated at around three. Messed up things were scattering around the body, there were dried stains of blood on the carpet, the vault (were Jonghyun places his money) was opened and the cabinet was forcefully opened.

Jonghyun looked pale; he looked paler than he was three days ago. He had been anxious for the last few days yet he wouldn’t tell it. He had been hesitant about telling what he’s been feeling and what was happening to him. Onew haven’t tried asking him ‘coz he know that his girlfriend was there to help him.

The teams of police officers were busy scrutinizing every piece of evidence found at the crime scene.  Everyone looked serious, eager to solve the crime as much as possible.

Onew came running towards the crime scene; he was greeted by the serious tone of Inspector Lee Donghae. Donghae was one of the respected officials in the metropolitan police department along with Kim Jonghyun. Unlike Jonghyun, he’s a bit older in terms of service; he had been promoted as early as nineteen, because of his keen deductions and supreme intelligence even if he’s still in high school. Onew envied him, Donghae was his classmate in high school, they all (Onew, Jonghyun, Key, and Minho) were considered as high school detectives. Donghae was the one who shines upon them all. But they say that everything has their own weaknesses, and the weakness of Donghae was the frustration of Onew. During their high school years, it was him who always solves the cases but it’s Donghae who receives the praises. He tried to brawl the idea but he couldn’t. Donghae was the prominent one because he was the son of an inspector of Metropolitan police department.

But he couldn’t think less for now; there is this more important thing to be thought first before anything.

“It’s robbery and homicide.” Inspector Donghae said. The hint of firmness in his tone was heard. Onew nodded in affirmation.

“And the cause of death?” He asked in response.

“Strangulation”

“What was the weapon used? Rope?”

“Probably, but the strangulation marks doesn’t give the marks that rope does, plus, there isn’t any fiber found on the neck of the vic.”

“Oh, I see. Was there enough evidence to prove the speculations?”

“Judging from the open vault, the messy apartment, the footsteps from the crime scene to the backyard, it’s enough to prove that this is robbery.”

“But do you think the vault can be easily opened by force? I’m pretty sure that the vault of Jonghyun is well secured.”

“Scratches were seen from the neck of the base, the lock was a bit curved.”

“Did anyone here the sound of hammering? Or any hard material hammered to it?”

“No. I mean, there wasn’t any. And this-” He showed a piece of cloth placed on a cellophane bag. “-was found near the vault.”

“Ah, you mean it was used so that no one would hear the sound of clanking and such? Such a witty culprit, huh?”

Donghae nodded.  The door opened soon after they talked. It was another police officer, a detective like him, Choi Siwon. He was wearing a serious look in his face along with the other police officers, though Jonghyun and Siwon are rivals, he saluted Jonghyun for his service and most likely, he felt that somehow, he’s responsible for the crime. He walked towards the place where Onew and Donghae are standing; he spoke even before Donghae could greet him.

“This is an accident.” Their eyes widened. Did he just say  'accident'?

“H-how could you say that? I mean, how could it be an accident?” Donghae said, flabbergasted.

“The projection of the corpse lies between the tatami floor and the tiled one. The weapon was found on the window sill. It was a long thread of nylon that measures for about thirty-five centimeters.  It was tied on the end which he probably used for a substitute lock for the window; the window lock was broken so I figured out that it might have been an accident.”

Onew gave a guffaw and so did Donghae. The whole thing was ridiculous, first, there wouldn’t be a stupid man to make a nylon thread as a substitute lock, plus, if you’re going to use the thread, wouldn’t it be absurd to use a thirty-five centimeter thread?

“Look Detective Choi, I think your report might help but do you think that a thread would enough to prove that everything is just an accident? Could you explain to us why the vault is open? Why we can find footsteps on the open portico of this house?” Donghae disagrees to the report.  It’s simply a dispute to the reasoning of the crime, and Onew agreed to what Donghae said.

“B-but! There was a blood found on the thread! The blood on the thread matched to the blood of the victim’s!”

Onew smirked. He thought of something,

“What if the culprit intended to do it? What if it’s only a way to mislead us in finding the true killer?”

Donghae and Siwon were left speechless.

Nevertheless, Onew is a good detective; he can easily perceive things that are needed well for the subject matter. Siwon apologized as soon as he began to realize the flaw in his reasoning, he promised to come back when he discovers something. As for Donghae, he drew a breath and patted Onew’s shoulder,

“I’m gonna be your assistant for now.”

Onew’s eyes widened. What did he just say?

“I know you can solve this. Promotions, you know? Plus, this is a big one, big justice on hold.”

Donghae smirked and started to walk outside the door. He stopped as soon as he was near the door,

“Be proud, an inspector is just your assistant in a case like this.”

Onew was still stunned with what Donghae had just done. It took him about a minute to realize all of those, in the end, he sighed and said…

“Wait. Is that how people express their gratitude? Pretty much like a show-off.”

Donghae smirked. “Let’s just say, it’s one form of flattery. I’m off for a break, give me five minutes.”

After that, Onew went near the corpse.
