Weir teams with Tadashi for Japan disaster relief

"I'm a huge fan of his work," says Weir. "So many of my girls wear his clothes. When I saw him at Fashion Week (at Tadashi's show at Lincoln Center), we had this kind of instant bond connection. He knows how much I love Japan and how many times I go per year to perform and visit."

(04/07/2011) - Designer Tadashi Shoji is a longtime admirer of figure skating, so when he met fashion lover Johnny Weir during Fashion Week earlier this year the two immediately hit it off.

"We discussed possible ways to collaborate on a project in the future," says Shoji, whose popular Tadashi line has been sold at upscale stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus for nearly three decades. Actress Mo'Nique wore a Tadashi creation to the 2010 Academy Awards. Other celebrity clients include Shakira, Tyra Banks, Kate Walsh and Sara Ramirez. In 2007, he launched the Tadashi Shoji Signature Collection, high-end, one-of-a-kind pieces. He also has the Tadashi Home Collection.

When the earthquake hit last month, Weir immediately called Shoji, who was born and raised in Sendai, Japan, to see if he and his loved ones were okay.

"Fortunately, all of my family are safe and well in Sendai," Shoji tells icenetwork.com. "When Johnny approached me after the tragedy in Japan to do something together, it just felt right."

Weir suggested to Shoji that they make a t-shirt. All proceeds will benefit the Japanese Red Cross Society. "Let's get it out there. Let's have all your fans and mine know about it and try to help raise as much money as possible," Weir says.

Weir says he left most of the creative work to Shoji, but Shoji describes the finished product as "a true collaboration between the two of us," he says. "I wanted something that conveyed how I felt about the people of Japan, something that gave a sense of solidarity and hope."

The idea for the image to center on the Japanese flag came from Weir. "I wanted it to be the theme," Weir says. "I'm a huge lover of all the warm-up uniforms with the different countries and I thought the Japanese flag would make a perfect t-shirt for Japan.

"I said we need to add some inspirational words. Tadashi came up with all the different words that are part of the shirt."

The t-shirt, "We Believe in You," debuted last week. People can go to TadashiShoji.com or JohnnyGWeir.com for details. It retails for $25 (including tax) and is available in unisex sizes XS to XL. It can also be ordered by phoning 1-877-TADASHI.

Weir says he was so excited when he first saw the t-shirt, which includes words like "Love," "Hope," "Faith" and "Prayers."

"It is everything that we wanted. I think people can be proud to wear it and say, 'I support Japan,'" says Weir. The goal is to raise as much money as possible for the Japanese Red Cross Society.

"The reaction has been great. It is selling well and we are in our second reorder," says Shoji.

Shoji is also donating 10% of storewide sales through April 15 at his South Coast Plaza and Forum shops in Las Vegas.

"You can never turn your back on where you come from," Weir says. "This has hit so many people so hard. It's really unbelievable. You never want this to happen anywhere.

"Japan is one of those countries that throughout my whole career and still to this day has been so special to me and has sort of fed me so much inspirationally," he continues. "I have so many fans there and so many friends now.

"It's one of my home countries."
