I wonder if they surprise any of you...
10. LMFAO - Sexy And I Know It
2011 was the big one for LMFAO. First we had The Party Rock Anthem, which introduced us to Shuffling. But to me, their best song of this year is by far Sexy and I Know It, if only for those ridicilous small and shiny pants.
9.Rihanna - Man Down.
While R&B isn't really my cup of tea, this song by Rihanna got me secretly dancing and singing along. I feel like this song has her returning to her roots more, with the Ratatata beats and vocals. Secondly, I think I should at least feature on Urban song in this list, since it was also the year of the urban ladies, like her, Beyonce and Niki Minaj. Thirdly, this video is really strong and kept people talking. The original uncensored one was banned from MTV, so it was only aired without the part where she shot the man. Weirdly enough, the part where he sexually harassed her (and probably raped her) was left in....
8. Lana del Rey - Video Games
The first time I saw this video, I was surprised to find out it was a rather young girl singing this. Her husky vocals remind me of the '50's. I can see her singing Happy Birthday to president Obama, in hommage to that other beautiful woman, Marilyn Monroe. It also felt a bit unfair, such a beautiful woman also being blessed by a gorgeous voice. However, the internet crowd already deemed her as ugly for - I'm not making it up - her large mouth and full lips. *le sigh*
7. UnderOath - Paper Lung.
There was a big concern under the UnderOath fanbase for the new album. How was UnderOath going to be able to carry on without Aaron Gillespie, drummer and only original member of the band? Well, by turning out a great post-hardcore album! Sure, at times, the clean vocals of Aaron are missed, but Spencer takes these parts on now, just as the screaming, and he's doing fine. Paper Lung was the second single of their new album and to me it really shows the change they made. Less screaming, more melodic sounds, a solidly good song to compete with all the other metal-influenced bands out there.
6. White Lies - Strangers
This London-based trio is known for their clean appearance and polite manners. Something we do not see in this video! It features shots made by web-cam, gradually exposing more. We see the band performing the song, but also webcammers from all over the world practicing their fetish. In the end the video links to a site where people can go to share their fetish and feel less alone. For me it was a 'guess-the-fetish' video, for others (under whom my best friend) jaw-dropping sexual education.
The song itself shows the strength of The White Lies, clean vocals and chords, and not so clean lyrics. Listen to their album a little bit better. You might find out that Harry doesn't sing about romantic love, but about something entirely different.
5. Bring Me The Horizon - Alligator Blood.
Screamo at it's finest! Guitar riffs which will make your ear gasm. Vocals which could easily take on any of your death-metal vocalists - with ease. Haunting lyrics which are a signature for this band. Fans feared BMTH had gotten too soft, because previous singles like It Never Ends and Blessed with a Curse had more singing vocals and even choirs in it. Alligator Blood set that straight. For me it's a sign that the screamo/hardcore genre isn't dead yet. Rather, it's here to stay and kicking ass!
4. Adele - Someone Like You
While we had LMFAO fooling and shuffling around in 2011, there was also the wave of pure music, where music mainly consists of a few instruments and gorgeous vocals.
At the British Music awards this became most apparent when an over-choreographed performance of Rihanna was received with luke-warm critics, but everyone was blown away by a beautiful lady, standing next to a piano and pouring all of her heart-break over us with that magnificent voice! Be honest, who of you didn't get teary-eyed when at the final chorus her voice broke in emotion?
3. Birdy - The A-Team (Ed Sheeran cover)
A girl of only 15 touched our hearts with her amazing voice and lovely piano-play. And she's Dutch! The A-team was a good song by Ed Sheeran, but when she sings this, so small, sitting behind her piano, the song really hits home. My prediction is that we will hear a lot more of this young singer in 2012
2. Gotye- Somebody That I Used To Know.
This song should be in every Top list about music. It topped out charts for 13 weeks, still gets a lot of airplay, but guess what? It doesn't get boring! One of the radio-dj's over here put it like this: “It's a song which could have been made not only now, in 2011, but just as easy in the seventies and eighties. It's timeless.” I can only agree.
Why it didn't make my number one spot? Well..
1. The Horrors - Still Life/ I Can See Through You/ Oceans Burning
How can you pick only one song if the ENTIRE album is as good, as epic, as mind-blowing as Skying is? Want to know what's even more amazing about it? It wasn't produced or mixed by a big ass producer. The guys did it themselves!
Their music is being referred to as early-Simple Minds crossed with The Verve, but I will go even further by saying their music has some Pink Floyd-ish qualities. It's that epic!
Honourable Mentions:
They didn't make it to the list, but just to name a few songs I also really enjoyed.
+ Avicci - Levels;
+ Lonely Boy - Black Keys
+ Asking Alexandria- To The Stage
+ Radiohead - Lotus Flower (No-one can dance like Thom Yorke)
Where are the Foo Fighters, Coldplay and/or the Red Hot Chillipeppers, you ask?
Well, i know everybody is creaming their panties about their new albums, but quite frankly....*yawn*
And Anthony's mustache scares me ( also: pedo-vibe anyone?)
(Though Yes, the FooFighters new album wasn't bad, but to me it didn't sound different from their previous album. I fear the Iron-Maiden curse. Let it not be true!)
not yours,
top 10 2011,
my opinion,
