So, I have now officially been through my first housing selection at WPI. And with the way it went, i'm pretty sure it will be my last housing selection at WPI.
WPI uses a lottery system to pick your on-campus housing. The numbers ran from 1-600+; I got number 96. So, after much discussion with other people, I went into the Odeum that night with several different contingency plans...
1. If by the time #92 was called there were any 7 person apartments left, I would go w/ a group of ppl from the other side of the hall, and joe, into a 7 person apartment.
2. If there were any 3 person apartments left by the time #96 was called, I would go into a 3 person apartment with Gen and Keeley.
3. Kitchen or bust; I was basically going to live w/ Keeley and Gen no matter what, and if we couldn't get a kitchen, I would probably get an off campus apartment w/ them.
So, now it's housing selection night. I go to the Odeum w/ Gen and Keeley at approx 6:20 (it started at 6:00) and they were up to number 10. So, we wait. Eventually Deke (someone from ballroom) comes over and asks us what we are planning to do - we tell him we're hoping for a 3 person aptmnt. Well... so is he. And he's number 91. AND there are only 5 on campus.
number 40 is called - there are only 3 apartments left.
number 60 is called - there are only 2 left.
Eventually, by the time number 70-something was called, there was only 1 left. So, we weren't get a 3 person apartment.
BUT, this year, the 5 person apartments were going pretty slow. The group Joe was going with was going to get a 5 person if there were any when their number was called - 92. Unfortunately, that left Joe SOL as far as a place to live. So, at the last minute (like number 85-90), me/gen/keeley/joe are running in cirlces trying to find one more guy to fill out a 5 person apartment. We're in line... like 2 groups in front of us... when finally joe finds a roommate - this kid aaron who lives down the hall from us on D4.
And we manage to grab one of the last 5 person apartments on campus.
It's nice - 2 bedrooms (one triple and one double), a kitchen, and a small living area. The bedrooms are on a separate floor, as is the shared bathroom.
Yeah... and they ran out of room on campus. Next years incoming class is the largest WPI has seen to date... and they didn't let ANY upperclassmen into the freshman dorms, like they did last year. Basically, if your group didn't have a number under 250, you were SCREWED. Literally screwed. Like, WPI ran out of housing screwed, told you to find somewhere to live by yourself.
Yeah... I think i'm going to try to live off campus next year. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT want to go through this again... unless i have a number under, like, 50 ;)
oh yeah - and the weather is AMAZING up here right now :). Just hope it stays this way... ::fingers crossed:: :-D
