It’s been a long, tiring day and her mind keeps going back to earlier that morning. She was in her bathroom and she glanced at her calendar. Today was the 4th of August-her fellowship ends on the 31st. She wonders if he remembers or even knows that her time there (with him) will be over soon.

She walks into the conference room before heading home and sits at her desk. On top of all her papers, there’s a form.

Extended Fellowship.

And suddenly she wants to cry, because she doesn’t know how she feels. She doesn’t even know if she can feel anymore, and she wants to blame him for that.
She picks up her pen and lowers it onto the paper. But she stops, and without thought, throws the form into the trashcan next to her desk.
When she looks up, she sees him through the glass. He’s standing in the hallway, staring at her with a blank expression on his face. She stares back and soon she begins to cry.

“I’m sorry,” she mouths to him.

He smirks-not that smirk he always shows when he solves a case or thinks he’s figured someone out, not the smirk that she’s seen for 2 years, 4 months, and 11 days-but it’s something different.

He nods.

“Me, too,” He mouths back, and she can see the sincerity in his face and she knows the meaning behind his words.

He turns and walks away, and she realizes that she can’t blame him for the way she feels, because in some twisted way, he’s the one who taught her to feel.

To think I might not see those eyes,
Makes it so hard not to cry.
And as we say our long goodbyes,
I nearly do.
