He can’t sleep that night. Many times he begins to drift off and then suddenly dreams that Cameron is gone, gone from the hospital, gone from his life. He wakes up sweating, his heart racing, and he cannot stand it any longer. He wants to check on her and see if she’s okay. In her current state, a fight similar to the one that occurred earlier that night could not hold good results. He decides that he was an idiot to even let her go home alone. He picks up his phone and dials her number. It rings only three times before she answers.
“Hey”, she says.
“How did you know it was me?” He asks.
“There’s this new thing, now, you might’ve heard of it. It’s called caller id.” She responds sarcastically.
He sees her sarcasm as a good sign, but doesn’t mention that. He doesn’t want to make her feel like some patient of his.
“Ha-Ha,” He responds slowly.
Then there’s a long silence and the only sound is the sound of their breathing.
She sighs. “What do you want, House?” She asked in an annoyed tone, “Is this fun for you, now? Am I finally interesting enough?” She’s so sick of his games that it’s nauseating.
He’s quiet for a moment, not knowing how to respond.
“That’s not it,” He replies softly, and she’s shocked at his tone.
“Well, what is it?” She asked incredulously.
“I’m coming over,” he replies quickly.
“What?” She asks, clearly shocked. But he had already hung up.
Five minutes later and there’s a knock at her door.
She gets up off her couch and walks over to the door, opening it enough for him to enter and immediately going back to her spot on the couch.
He walks in slowly, admiring her place. He had only seen a part of it when he had come to get her to go back to work.
“Nice place,” he murmurs.
“Thanks,” she replies softly.
“You want something to drink?” She asks in an uncomfortable tone.
“No thanks,” He replies. And she can’t help but look at him shocked in the manner and tone of his words. She thinks that maybe this is the longest he’s ever gone without making a snarky comment.
He notices that she’s not as angry as he expected her to be. He then realizes that she’s probably in shock from this sudden visit. This is so unlike him, even he knows it.
There is yet another awkward silence and it’s smothering her. She can’t stand it and she opens her mouth to speak, but he beats her to it.
“I know that you’re wondering why I’m here and to tell you the truth, I’m wondering the same thing. I’m literally standing here, trying to think of a reason for me being here because the one reason that I have in my mind is completely ridiculous and I’m trying to make sense of this whole thing.” He exclaims in one long sentence and takes a deep breath.
She looks at him and his heart nearly stops beating because suddenly, he could’ve sworn that, for a moment, he saw the sparkle in her eyes. The one that he had been missing for some time now.
“What’s this ridiculous reason that you’re talking about?” She asks in a soft voice.
“To admit it, would ruin me.” He says in a serious tone but she knows that he’s just being House.
“I promise I won’t tell a soul,” she states, amused by his nervousness.
He stands there for a moment, hesitating to speak. She can tell by the look on his face that she had better never forget what he’s about to say because he will never say anything like it again. She waits. Finally, he finds his voice.
“I feel guilty,” he says in a nervous voice, “I haven’t felt guilty in years, but yet, a few words from you changes all that.” She looks at him confused and he continues on. “I hound you and mock you but I knew that you were strong and that you can handle it. I never would have expected this. And it’s not just the fact that I feel partly responsible for what you’re going through, it’s the fact that YOU are going through it.” She looks at him with a face that is asking him to explain more and he sighs. He knows that probably none of this is making any sense. He then continues, “I couldn’t sleep tonight because I kept dreaming that you were gone. That you were no longer in my life, and that scares the shit out of me. The fact that you,” It is here that his voice becomes shaky and he stops to breathe, and then continues, “were considering--” He looks at her and she nods, knowing what he was about to say. “That kills me.” Tears began to form in his eyes and Cameron just looks at him, shocked. “Everything that I mock about you---the way you care, your ethical values---everything that usually nauseates me, is actually everything that I love about you.” Tears are now forming in Cameron’s eyes, and she thinks that this might just be the best night of her life. “I thought that I was too screwed up to love anyone, I was wrong, I just wouldn’t let myself. As for my ridiculous idea, I thought that maybe since we’re both a little damaged, well very damaged,” He smirked and Cameron laughed while tears streamed down her face, “…that maybe we could help each other. Because I’m not doing so well on my own, Cameron,” He pauses, “and I figured you’d might like the company.” He says with a smirk on his face. Cameron smiles warmly at him. “What do you think?” He asks innocently. Cameron nods with a smile on her face. “Okay,” She replies. And once again, House sees that sparkle in her eyes, and he smiles to himself, because he knows that it’s here to stay.
